back Deric Dudinski has narrowed his future football options to three
choices. The senior, who has fielded offers from many Division II football
programs, has decided to either walk on to the James Madison University football
program, accept an offer from D-I AA La Salle University, or attend a prep
school for a post-graduate year.
"It is going to be one of
those three," said Dudinski, who will visit JMU this Friday before heading up
to Pennsylvania to check out La Salle on Saturday.
While La Salle does not
enter a scholarship conference until 2008, Dudinski said that the financial aid
that La Salle can offer makes the school an affordable choice.
The third option would keep
Dudinski in high school for one more year at a military prep school such as Fork
Union, Hargrave or Mercersburg.
This would give Dudinski an
extra year to build his football experience, as well as raise his GPA and SAT
scores, which would improve his standing with the Ivy League programs.
"It will give me a chance
to put on 20 more pounds and get my speed down," said Dudinski.
The prep school football
programs play against D-III college programs, as well as D-I junior varsity
teams, but the season does not count as an NCAA year for its players.
"A couple of the higher
schools said that if I had a year at [a prep school] and I get that experience,
then next year, when I come around, [they will give me a look]," said Dudinski.
The 5-foot-9, 185-pound
back ran for 2,057 yards and 25 touchdowns this year, ending his four-year
career with 5,692 rushing yards, a school record. Dudinski also recorded 94
tackles and seven interceptions as a starting defensive back for the Patriots.
Dudinski's size and Park
View's AA status has made D-I coaches wary of the Patriots' back.
"If people would look at
an athlete, a return man, a defensive back, they would be much more willing to
grab him," said Hill. "He has always had to prove himself and he is going to
have to do it again. He is up for the challenge, that is for sure."
