2011 VirginiaPreps.com Single A All State Football Team!
FIRST TEAM:
OFFENSE
Quarterback Freeman McPhearson 6-foot-3, 205 pounds King William (Jr)
Coach James Henderson told VirginiaPreps.com: "McPhearson had 100 completions on 198
attempts for 1,856 yards, 29 TDs and 7 INTs, 140 carries for 904 yards (6.46
ypc) and 14 TDs and led an offense that averaged 42.8 points per game. He
put up these remarkable numbers in his first season as QB for the Cavaliers,
despite being pulled out at half-time in 4 games. He also added two catches on
the season (one for a TD). Teams had to game plan to try and stop him and our
running game up front, which allowed for the big passing numbers. His TD to INT
record shows his knack for making good decisions. To show his growth in learning
a new system 5 of his 7 interceptions came in the first 4 games. We did not have a single 1000 yard rusher, but he very easily
could have had well over 1000 yards if we would have run him more, as he had
less than 10 carries in 6 of our games. His ability to be a dual threat QB gave
the defenses we faced trouble all year."
Running
Back: Trey Edmunds 6-foot-2, 205 pounds Dan River (Sr)
Dan River coach Ferrell Edmunds told VirginaPreps.com: "Trey Edmunds is one of
the most unselfish players I have ever coached. In one of our most important
games of the season, our first ever 2nd play-off game, the coaches wanted to run
our second stream running back mostly in effort to throw the defense off. We
knew Trey would be an excellent lead blocker for him. As a result, Trey did not
receive any carries I believe until the last few minuets in the second quarter.
The offense coach kept telling him, "don't worry Trey we are going to get you
the ball soon", Trey's reply was, "its okay coach, I just want to win!", mind
you he was in the mist of setting the school record for most running yards ever
in the schools history....that was the furthest from his mind at that
time...needles to say he did end up getting his carries and rushed for almost
300 yards....he also achieved setting the record not only in rushing yards but
scoring the most touchdowns as well."
Running
Back: Logan Moore, 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, Riverheads (Jr):
"What makes Logan great is his ability to score at any time," teammate Hunter
Jensen said, "especially in big games." Moore finished the season, which saw the
Gladiators' 25-game winning streak come to an end in the Group A, Division 2
quarterfinals, four yards shy of 2,000 with 1,996 rushing yards and 32
touchdowns. He averaged a first down every time he carried the ball at 10.2
yards."Everyone knows that he's a fast kid," Riverheads coach Robert Casto said.
"But he's a strong runner inside as well as outside. He's got great vision and
great balance."
Wide
Receiver: D.J. Johnson 5-foot-7, 160 pounds King William (Sr)
Coaches' Comments: "Davonne had 30 carries
for 335 yards (11.17 ypc) 3 TD's 38 receptions for 826 yards (21.74 ypc) 14
TD's, his production per touch is none like I have ever seen. He would always be
the one that would step up and made a play when we needed it all year. Much of
his yardage came after the catch, and he was great at making people miss. He,
like Freeman, sat out in the second half of 4 of our games. As you can see from
his stats, we probably should have gotten him the ball more. While
Davonne received much of his credit on the offensive side of the ball, and
rightfully so, he was very effective on the defensive side as well. He was
matched up on our opponents top wide receiver as part of our game plan. He was a great
defender for us this year, and very much deserving of recognition on both sides
of the football."
Wide
Receiver: Deion George 6-foot-2, 195 pounds Galax (Sr)
Stats: 40 Recs, 864
yds, 21.6 average, 15 TD, 1 Rushing TD, 1 Kick Return TD, 2 Punt Return TD,
Total 19 TD. (Total Yards 1559- rec, rush, returns) Coach Mark Dixon's comments:
"A game changer for us. He
faced double coverage the majority of the season. Sensational hand-eye
coordination coupled with deep speed and tremendous jumping ability. Deion
stretches the field vertically and is a dominating blocker on the edge.
Recruiting interest for Deion has increased substantially over the last month.
Deion is an excellent basketball player as well and his college opportunities
will continue to increase as people see his tremendous athleticism on the
basketball court. Deion is just starting to scratch the surface of his football
ability he has a huge frame that will continue to fill out."
Tight-end: Hardy Lester ,
6-foot-4, 225 pounds, George Wythe (Jr)
Lester "We had a great season, being the second team in school history to go
undefeated in the regular season. Our only loss was to a very talented Clintwood
team who ended up winning state. This past years team was unlike any other team.
We had a special bond that helped us achieve a 12-1 season. Being only a junior
I'm looking forward to next year but I'm going to miss this senior class. My
stats were eight catches for 235 yards and three touchdowns"
Offensive
Line: Austin Kelly , 6-foot-7, 339 pounds, Clintwood (Sr)
When asked about winning a
state title, Kelly told Tim Hayes ""It feels good," said Clintwood lineman
Austin Kelly. "Today when we came in me and [linebacker/fullback] Austin Dotson
talked and said we're going to be remembered for the rest of our lives [by
winning a state title]. Those teams from the 70s ? we're right there with them."
Offensive
Line: Coleman Osborne , 6-foot-4, 245 ponds, Gretna (Sr)
Coach Kevin Saunders comments: "He had a great year at center and at defensive tackle
for us. He was an all state (coaches) selection the last two years on the
offensive line, and probably will be again this year. He called all
our blocking schemes. On defense he was a vital part of our defense as he demanded
double teams and was very physical on both sides of the ball."
Offensive
Line: Franklin Miller , 6-foot-4, 285 pounds, Riverheads (Sr)
Miller, another repeat first team all state selection, helped pave the way
for the Gladiators impressive running game which featured running backs Logan
Moore (see above) and Jordan Jack, who combined for over 3,400 yards rushing and
58 touchdowns. Miller is a multi-sport standout excelling in wrestling and
track (shot put).
Offensive
Line: Chaz Ramsey , 6-foot-3, 260 pounds, Wilson Memorial (Sr)
Ramsey told
VirginiaPreps.com, when asked about his season "Well we had a team that worked
hard and worked together. The coaches really put us in the best situations to
succeed and I feel like that is why we made it so far. And when you have great
backs like Connery Swift and Malik Rucks it made our job as offensive lineman a
lot easier. The O-line really trusted each other and it was a great group of
guys to work with. The guys on the team would work and compete everyday at
practice and it made everyone better players because of that. Everything we
accomplished this year was a team effort, from the big wins to the post season
awards, it was all a team effort."
Offensive Line: Woody Dixon , 6-foot, 205 pounds, Galax (Sr)
Galax coach Mark Dixon told VirginiaPreps.com: "A great football
player who plays with tremendous leverage and speed. We ran the ball behind
Woody in every critical situation. He is without a doubt the best O-lineman I
have ever coached. He is a technician with great hands and great feet. He was a
major factor in our run game that gained 3,688 yards, scored 58 touchdowns and
averaged 8.2 yards per carry.
Athlete:
A.J. Royal , 5-foot-9, 160 pounds, Amelia (Sr)
Amelia Coach Brad Bradley on Royal: "A.J. Royal had over 2000 yards rushing
for the season and
over 1,000 yards passing. He accounted for 39 touchdowns. Averaged 8.0 yards per carry for
the year. Led us to a 12-2 record. 1st team all District and all Region."
The 2011 VirginiaPreps.com Single A All State Team. Today we introduce
the first team defense and specialists.
DEFENSE: First Team
Defensive Line: Rory Haskins, 6-foot, 260 pounds, Gretna (Sr)
Kevin Saunders on Haskins: "I felt he was the most dominating defensive
lineman in our area and in all of Single A. He played defensive end and was all
over the field making tackles.. He couldn't be blocked one-on-one, and most of
the time not even double teamed."
Defensive Line: DeMar Wingo, 6-foot-2, 300 pounds, Amelia (Sr)
Brad Bradley on Wingo: "Third on the Raider team in Tackles. Very good
defensive lineman. Also played tackle on Offense. First team all District and
all Region. Very strong, great feet for his size.
Defensive Line: Christian Robbins, 6-foot-3 285 pounds, Lee (Sr)
When asked to reflect on his season, Robbins told VirginiaPreps.com "My best
memory in football is probably the gate city game this year, getting pick to
play in off season games is my accomplishment. I'm most proud of never giving up
no matter how hard things got even when no one was there for me"
Defensive Line: Allen O'Berry, 5-foot-9 155 pounds, Radford (Sr)
O'Berry has a sensational season for Radford earning first team all district
honors, as well as being named defensive player of the year and defensive
lineman of year. He was also named first team all region, remarkable feats for
a 5-foot-9, 155 pound nose guard.
Linebacker: Tony Miller, 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Gretna (Sr)
Miller capped off an outstanding career at Gretna by leading the Hawks to a
state title, and did a little, make that a lot of everything in the process. He
started the season at QB, passing for 664 yards on the 33 completions and five
TDs. A threat to score every time he touched the ball, he rushed for 949 yards
on 140 carries, scoring 18 times. In Gretna's D-2 state title win over
Goochland, Miller scored all three of the Hawks touchdowns, but all season long
he proved to be just as instrumental on defense.
Linebacker: Al'teriq Flowers, 6-foot, 190 pounds, Sussex Central (Sr)
Flowers was Tri Rivers and Region A defensive player of the year. One of the most instinctive and hard hitting linebackers to come out of Sussex Central.
Linebacker: Jess McLaughlin, 6-foot, 200 pounds, Goochland (Sr)
McLaughlin's accomplishments and statistics speak for themselves: He was
named the James River District and Region B Player of the Year, a three year
starters for Coach Joe Fowler who simply said "Dominant defensive player", stats: 117 tackles (21 tackles for loss),
blocked three kicks, recovered four fumbles, forced six fumbles
Linebacker:Frankie Shalabi , 6-foot, 215 pounds, Galax (Sr)
Mark Dixon on Shalabi: "Had an outstanding season for us and was named
Mountain Empire District Defensive Player of the Year, as well as Region C
Defensive Player of the Year, had 90 tackles, including 16 tackles for
loss, four forced fumbles, 10 passes broken up, and two interception.
Frankie was the most dominating defensive player in our region. Frankie is
extremely versatile, he plays over the tight-end on the line of scrimmage 1st
and 2nd down and then on 3rd down he moves inside for his coverage skills.
Tremendous power and instincts at the point of attack and a player that most be
accounted for when game planning against us. Our defense averaged giving up 2.9
yards per carry and that is in large part to Frankie's ability to dominate the
strong side of the field. Frankie began receiving increasing interest from
colleges as the season progressed. He is a whale of a football player and some
college is going to get a steal."
Defensive Back: Darrell Taylor , 5-foot-11, 180 pounds Sussex Central
(Sr)
Taylor has great technique and excellent closing speed. True D1 qualities in coverage, great tackler, and big hitter. Taylor also was first team on defense on the Tri Rivers and Region A teams.
Defensive Back: Zakell Johnson, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, Goochland (Sr)
Joe Fowler on Zakell: A "yes sir" player who will do whatever you need him
to do. Injuries forces us to move him from corner to strong safety at halftime
of the Buckingham game and he held that spot the rest of the year. A ferocious
tackler with the strength and speed to hold the edge. Second team all metro.
Defensive Back: Peyton Sivert, 5-foot-11, 201 pounds, Gate City (Sr)
Sivert's stats included 52 first hits, 43 second hits; six tackles behind the
line of scrimmage for losses of 26 yards, four quarterback sacks, and one sack.
Named the Clinch Mountain District defensive player of the year and defensive
back of the year
Athlete: Phillip Thomas-Banks , 5-foot-7, 170 pounds, King
William (Sr)
Jim Henderson on Thomas-Banks: For the season he had 128 tackles, 81 of
which were solo. 29 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, 11 tackles for loss,
21 quarterback hurries, and one interception. Phillip was the heart and
soul of a great defense. As a team we recorded five shutouts and gave up an
average of less than 10 points a game (including three playoff games). This
defense actually scored more touchdowns than they allowed in the last nine games
of the season. Phillip created havoc in the opponents backfield for an
entire game. From his outside linebacker position he was blitzing off of the
edge close to 90% of the time. Phillip played hard every snap, and at the end of
every play you would always find Phillip wherever the ball was. Phillip's stats
speak for themselves, but I cannot imagine to many players in the state that
were capable of doing things on the defensive side of the ball that he did.
Specialists:
Kicker: Colby Cooke, 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, Goochland (Sr)
Joe Fowler on Cooke: "A weapon on offense in that we were almost guaranteed
points once we crossed the 35 yard line. Third in VHSL history in career field
goals and tied for second in FG in a season with 17. His 51 yarder in the state
title game was amazing because we had to use brand new balls that were hard as a
rock and cold as ice. Plus he kicked off the ground all season. A first Team
All Metro (Richmond area) selection.
Punter: Thomas Meadows , 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Goochland (Sr)
Joe Fowler on Meadows: "A game changer who kept teams pinned back all season
long. He was a dominant force in the Amelia and King William games. Punts are
sky high. Like Cooke, he was a All-Metro selection."
Return Specialist: Kwame Gray , Washington & Lee (Jr)
Gray told VirginiaPreps.com "I had two punt returns for touchdown and one
punt return for a score! My biggest accomplishment was going undefeated in
our district and becoming district champs. Something that stood out to me was
the hard work and determination my team played with every night no matter the
conditions.
Return Specialist: Jacob Fisher , 5-foot-11, 195 pounds, Galax (Sr)
Scored five touchdowns on returns and had over 460 yards via returns. Mark
Dixon on Fisher: "Jacob changed the dynamic of every game. Early in the season,
Jacob dominated games with huge punt returns that set the tone in our biggest
games. As the season progressed, teams quit punting to Jacob and instead kicked
the ball out of bounds often providing us with short fields. Jacob's unique
combination of quickness and power essentially allowed us to play the game on
our opponents half of the field. He is largely responsible for us breaking the
school record for points scored in a single season (667 points). Jacob is
receiving interest both as a returner and a linebacker where he lead our team in
tackles and was typically the first person other coaches talked about after
every game we played for his game changing abilities."
