Final Stats for Western Branch:
Kendall Bynum 16Pts. 5-16FG, 4-8 3's, 4Ast. 3Stl.
D.J. Driscoll 12Pts. 5-10FG, 12Reb. 3Blk.
Saiquan White 9Pts. 8Reb. 3Ast.
DeMarcus Sheppard 7Pts. 4Reb. 3Ast.
Bruins - 19-57FG, 4-17 3's, 12-19FT, 36Reb. (17Off.), 15Ast. 19TO's, 6Blk. 10Stl.
Kavon James makes both foul shots and that'll do it - Cox up 58-54 on Western Branch with 4 seconds left in OT.
An unbelievable job by Bobby Wolfe, his staff and these Falcons players.
Western Branch starts the OT off with the first points via D.J. Driscoll inside on a stick-back. Cox answers with Jordan Lewis striking. The Bruins get another basket on a feed from DeMarcus Sheppard, finding Saiquan White in the high post elbow area for a jumper.
Ticking near 2 minutes left in OT and it's Western Branch up 54-52 on Cox.
Deshaun Creighton's tip-in ties it up for Cox at 54-all with under 1:30 now left in the OT. Illegal screen gives the ball back to Cox.
Nothing wrong with some free basketball. This has been a fun one down the stretch.
Few probably expected Cox to get this far with a chance, but here they are. Western Branch battled back from 12 down to get it to an extra sesion of basketball.
19.6 seconds left - Western Branch 50, Cox 50. Deshaun Creighton splits 2 free-throws. Bruins ball.
Is it Tayvion Robinson time? You would think. He had the buzzer-beater on Saturday in the regional semis against Western Branch's rival Oscar Smith.
We have drama, folks.
57.2 seconds left - Cox 49, Western Branch 48. It's Western Branch ball. Paul Hall calls a time-out. Ball went out of bounds, off of Cox, after a missed 3 by Young Choi.
If it's me, I'm pounding that thing inside with D.J. Driscoll and/or Saiquan White. Perfect time to run one of their hi-low plays that have been so effective all year.
2:51 left - Cox 47, Western Branch 43. Sophomore Deshaun Creighton having the game of his life - he's got 11 off the pine.
Creighton has been the x-factor. Nobody could've seen this coming.
Cox seems to be making all the 'timely' or 'winning' plays tonight. But Western Branch still has time if they can execute and get stops.
It has been an adventure to say the least with foul shooting for Western Branch this season. Tonight, they need them to capture their first regional title.
Tayvion Robinson hits a free-throw. Misses the 2nd, but Keshawn Lewis gets the offensive rebound and Robinson is fouled. Shoots 2 more.
Keep an eye on Kendall Bynum of Western Branch now, too. He's starting to draw some Division I attention with Liberty and South Alabama taking a close look, even though he has yet to pull that first offer.
Remember that name Jordan Lewis. He's a Class of 2020 guard with Division I potential.
It'll either be a couple of days for the Beach District to remember or another big Western Branch comeback, their M.O. all season long.
Either way, it will be tough to top the finish we had from last night with Salem edging Hampton on Jonathan Norfleet's game-winning three-pointer with five seconds to go as the #8 seed grabbed the region crown.
Cox badly needed that shot in the arm.
Coach Bobby Wolfe of the Falcons can breathe a sigh of relief, even if only briefly.
The pace is picking up and that, with the momentum on Western Branch's side, is not good news for Cox. The Falcons don't have an overly deep bench, and they want to get things settled into the half-court if possible. Even though Cox can knock it down from distance with Kavon James, they don't want to settle for 3's either and make sure Tayvion Robinson is involved offensively and they get their guards in the lane.
Here comes the Western Branch run. They trail Cox 30-26 with 3:07 to go 3rd quarter. Kendall Bynum looks really engaged defensively, checking Cox sophomore PG Jordan Lewis, and the bigs D.J. Driscoll and Saiquan White are now hitting the glass.
It's a 10-2 Bruins run in the blink of an eye.
Keshawn Lewis has improved quite a bit for Cox from last season to this year, recording several double-doubles and even a triple-double this year. He's a better ball-handler than a season ago and gets others involved.
Cox leads Western Branch by 12 now - 28-16 - early in the third period after a Keshawn Lewis basket. It's the sixth time that the Bruins have been down double-digits this season and they are 4-1 in those games with the lone loss coming in their regular season road finale at Indian River. They had incredible comebacks against Lakeland twice as well as Patriot and Oscar Smith, where they outscored the Tigers 12-0 in the final two minutes.
For Cox at the break - Tayvion Robinson 10Pts. 5-9FG, 5Reb. 2Ast. Jordan Lewis 4Pts. 6Reb. Falcons - 11-29FG, 2-10 3's, 2-4FT, 7TO's.
For Branch at the break - Kendall Bynum 5Pts. 1-6FG, 2Ast. DJ Driscoll 3Pts. 1-5FG, 7Reb. Bruins 5-29FG (17.2%), 1-7 3's, 5-8FT, 4TO's.
We'll see if that has an impact later in the contest.
Remember, the winner of this one gets to play in the '757' against Region B runner-up Franklin County, which will be making a long trip to the Tidewater area. Meanwhile, the loser hits the road to Manchester High to take on Region B Champ James River, who beat Franklin County on a tip-in at the buzzer in that regional title game last weekend.
Someone has to explain that one to me as Robinson has been terrific athletically in two sports, and without him, the Falcons don't go 17-4 this past regular season on the hardwood.
Western Branch has yet to get in a rhythm offensively, and if they are going to win, it may take their fifth comeack from double-digits this season.
The Cox guard quartet of Tayvion Robinson, Jordan Lewis, Kavon James and Keshawn Lewis have been in control of this one so far. Western Branch has to get on track offensively or else the Falcons will see their confidence continue to grow.
Tayvion Robinson is doing it again early here at Scope. After scoring all 19 of his second half points in his team's wild comeback from 15 down to stun Oscar Smith in the regional semifinals, he has 8 of the first 12 Cox points. His Falcons lead Western Branch by 7 late in the opening period.
Bruins Head Coach Paul Hall has both of his big men - Southeastern District Player of the Year D.J. Driscoll and Saiquan White - on the bench late in this opening stanza.
Western Branch is getting a lot of quality looks, but they aren't going down for the Bruins.
The Beach Distrit has seen three teams win region titles here at Scope with Princess Anne Girls and Salem Boys as well as Landstown Girls. Could it actually win all four region title games played here at Scope? Hard to believe, but it's possible.
Girls Class 6, Region A Finals: Landstown (19-5) vs. Ocean Lakes (18-6):
Final Stats for Landstown Girls:
Alyssa Norris 17Pts. 4-8 3's, 5Stl. 3Reb.
Madison Edge 12Pts. 13Reb.
Kendra Allen 10Pts. 5-8FG, 9Reb. 4Stl.
LHS - 20-63FG, 7-22 3's, 8-15FT, 46Reb. (23Off.), 13Ast. 10TO's, 14Stl.
Final Stats for Ocean Lakes Girls:
Kayla McMakin 10Pts. 4-13FG, 10Reb. 5Ast. 3Stl.
Kendle Dalrymple 6Pts. 2-4 3's.
Faith Spangler 6Reb.
OL - 11-41FG, 3-16 3's, 6-8FT, 26Reb. (4Off.), 8Ast. 19TO's, 5Blk. 5Stl.
Another job well done by Vic Rosado as his team had maybe a couple more question marks this year going in than some recent seasons. Some final numbers to come shortly...
A 12-4 burst to begin the 4th quarter and it's definitely out of reach for the Ocean Lakes Girls, who'll be headed to Manchester High School this Friday to take on Cosby, a recent three-time consecutive State Champ in Group 6A prior to last year.
Meanwhile, Landstown will stay close to home and be at Kellam High School on Saturday and welcome in Region 6B visitor James River of Midlothian.
Under a minute to play and Landstown leads Ocean Lakes 54-31.
Landstown has simply carried over its momentum from the end of the first half and taken it to the third quarter. They've kept arguably Ocean Lakes' most dynamic scorer, Kyla McMakin, from burning them in the point department and they've remained balance at their end with Alyssa Norris, Alexa Roberson, Madison Edge, Zoe Maynard and Kendra Allen (UMASS signee for softball) all ontributing in some way.
Edge has been a factor on the glass with nine rebounds so far as we end the third period of play.
It's amazing Ocean Lakes went the first 19 minutes of action without a trip to the charity stripe. That's a great job defensively of Landstown to stay disciplined without fouling.
Ocean Lakes Head Coach Hershel Mack wastes no time and burns a quick time-out to try to get his team to calm down so that this doesn't get away from them.
For Landstown Girls at the break - Madison Edge 8Pts. 5Reb. Alyssa Norris 6Pts. Lady Eagles - 9-33FG, 3-14 3's, 6-10FT, 21Reb. 3TO's.
For Ocean Lakes Girls at the break - Kyla McMakin 6Pts. 6Reb. 5Ast. 2Stl. Lady Dolphins - 8-23FG, 3-10 3's, 0-0FT, 16Reb. 11TO's.
Alexa Roberson - whose older brothers D.J. and Jordan were standouts in the Beach District playing for the Landstown boys years ago - is headed to play her College Basketball at Division II Barton College in North Carolina.
As Hershel Mack of Ocean Lakes told me on Saturday, they often live by the 3 and die by the 3. They hit 3 of their first 6 tries from downtown, but can that continue as the game progresses and Landstown turns up the heat defensively? We'll find out.
Zoe Maynard delivers from 3-point range and Landstown Girls go ahead 9-8 on Ocean Lakes with 1:20 left 1stQ in Region 6A Championship.
We've got a pair of Championship games in Class 6, Region A tonight as it'll be Landstown against Ocean Lakes in Girls action first. Landstown won both regular season meetings - 52-50 in triple-overtime and 43-35. This also happens to be a re-match of last year's regional title game in 6A-South, which Landstown won in its gym over Ocean Lakes.
On the Boys side, it'll be Western Branch taking on Cox, which rallied from 15 points down in the third quarter to dispatch Oscar Smith in the regional semifinals and keep us from having an All-Chesapeake showdown here at the Norfolk Scope. It's the first trip to the State Tournament for Cox, while Western Branch is making its second straight appearance in the State Playoffs after falling last year in the semifinals to a C.D. Hylton team they beat in the regional semis.
