Resilient Eagles Come Out on Top:

Resiliency. That's the word Landstown Head Football Coach Tommy Reamon used to describe his Eagles following a hard-fought 7-6 road victory at Princess Anne in the rain on Thursday night.

"That's what we showed and I'm very proud of that," Reamon said. "As much as we moved the ball in this wet weather, we never lost discipline."

That assessment could've have been any truer. A week before in a 21-0 shutout of Kempsville, the Eagles were flagged for double-digit penalties. Their first and lone penalty on the night against Princess Anne didn't come until the fourth quarter, shortly after grabbing the lead.

Landstown had opportunities to score before the fourth period, though would trail 6-0 at the end of three quarters of play. That's because they were unable to convert on fourth down on four separate occasions, three of which came inside the Princess Anne 30-yard line. Cavaliers senior linebacker Jacob Garcia was responsible for two of those stops on fourth down.

Perhaps the most frustrating of failed conversion tries for the Eagles came when they couldn't punch it in on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line. However, field position stayed in their favor much of the night and they would get in the red zone one more time, eventually finding the end zone.

Robbie Davis, the senior that was stopped on the fourth-and-goal earlier in the contest, would set Landstown up inside the 10-yard line after a pair of runs that netted 22 yards. Junior quarterback Brent Stukes completed the short drive with a three-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Jalen Jennings.

A successful extra point by senior place-kicker Corey Deese broke the tie and gave Landstown the lead for good, 7-6 with 11:07 remaining in the game.

Stukes paced the offensive attack for Landstown, which was without junior running back Victor Jones due to a thigh injury. In his absence, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback did a lot of the running game, accounting for 118 of the squad's 161 total yards.

In fact, the Eagles ended up using Stukes for 23 of their 36 rushing attempts. He ended up with 86 yards on the ground, plus was rather accurate on his underneath passes. Stukes wound up connecting on 10 of 14 passes for 32 yards to five different receivers. Fellow junior Joseph White, who scored a pair of touchdowns the week before, had two of those catches for 29 yards.

With the win, Landstown is now 2-0 overall. The Eagles have won 14 of the 16 meetings in their all-time series with Princess Anne, which fell to 1-1 overall.

Stout Defense Leads Landstown:

A week ago, Princess Anne piled up 48 points on First Colonial in a season-opening win. But the Landstown defense, which pitched a shutout of Kempsville, did not let the Cavaliers find similar success on them.

They kept Princess Anne out of the end zone over the game's final 43 minutes, and more importantly, applied constant pressure on QB Michael Vickers the whole night. Landstown's defense came up with five sacks from five different players in Davis, senior linebacker Colby Nottenkamper, plus junior defensive linemen Michael Green and Patrick Miles.

Throw in senior defensive end Julian Freeze, a James Madison commit that was in on a couple of stops behind the line of scrimmage and hurried a Vickers pass on another occasion, they made the Princess Anne offense one-dimensional. The Cavs ended up with just 20 yards passing on 1-of-6. In total, PA managed 113 yards of offense on 35 plays.

Stukes and White, who had a pair of pass breakups, highlighted the pass coverage, while three sophomores in Jennings, Bryan Pederson and Connor Siock also saw considerable action.

Cavs No Slouch Anymore:

Prior to Jelani Fair's arrival as Head Coach at Princess Anne in 2015, the Cavaliers had lost 68 of their previous 71 games. He's guided them to four victories in 12 games and nearly a fifth.

That may not seem like much, but for the Virginia Beach program that was dominant in the 1960's and a playoff contender in the early 2000's (during the days of C.J. Fayton, Cedric Humes and Kai Parham - guys that went to Tennessee, Va. Tech and UVA respectively), it's improvement.

The Cavs have at least four prospects that probably warrant more recruiting attention than they're currently receiving in senior RB D.J. Walton, junior WR/DB Darryl Jones, junior LT/DT Amelio Moran and junior RT/DT Anthony Roberts.

Walton had a couple of runs with authority. He finished with 98 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, plus made an interception on defense. Few players mean as much to their team as he does for his in all three phases - offense, defense and special teams.

Jones immediately stands out with his 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame and made some dazzling catches during passing league over the summer. His numbers in this particular game - four tackles with a sack and no receptions on offense - don't fully illustrate the type of talent and upside he possesses.

Moran and Roberts are bookends on the offensive line. Similar to Jones, it's a mystery how Moran doesn't have any offers or more interest from schools at the next level. He had one of the two sacks registered by the Princess Anne defense.

While Princess Anne was unable to beat Landstown, the seven points they held them to was the fewest scored by the Eagles in the series. That came one year after the 21 points scored Landstown was the fewest they had against Princess Anne.
