It was one of the more peculiar seasons for Virginia High School Basketball. Certainly COVID-19 has made for stranger times during 2020-21, but with more than 70 schools opting out of winter sports for safety reasons, the field shrunk. In addition, title games were played in High School gymnasiums as opposed to at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond, the normal site more well over a decade for the title games.
Of course, back in 2019-20, only two teams in John Marshall Boys and Gate City Girls got to win sole state titles. The other five classifications for boys and girls hoops settled for Co-State Champs as the virus halted the remainder of the Finals at VCU.
Centreville was the lone program of the six State Champs on the Boys side to repeat, while Stone Bridge erased a 19-point deficit to win hardware in Class 5, Smithfield overcame a bit smaller deficit to win Class 4 in Winchester, Hopewell held off Abingdon on the road for the Class 3 title, Union protected home court against East Rock in Class 2, and Parry McCluer brought another state title for its veteran Head Coach who happened to beat his old school.
