Bobby Mongold has stepped aside as the Head Girls Basketball Coach, and at the conclusion of the current spring sports season, also as the Head Girls Soccer Coach at Broadway High School.
In a press release the school issued, Mongold noted that he's looking to, "devote more time to purusing new challenges and endeavors, including the Broadway Lynx soccer club."
Mongold, 46, went 146-70 in eight seasons as the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Broadway. Each season, the Gobblers reachd the regional playoffs and made four State Tournament appearances with the pinnacle coming in 2017 when they beat Magna Vista 51-41 to win the Group 3A State Championship. His team went a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range during the fourth quarter to pull away for that title.
That title victory was a sweet one for Mongold and his squad, which lost to Spotswood in the State Championship game in 2014 and to Turner Ashby in overtime of the State Final the following year.
A 1989 graduated of Broadway, Mongold sits at 41-11-4 in his third year at the helm of the girls soccer program. They reached the State Tournament in 2016, where Culpeper edged them 1-0 in the semifinals. Blacksburg ended up blanking Culpeper 6-0 in the Group 3A State Championship that year.
Prior to coming to Broadway, Mongold was the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Harrisonburg from 2005-10 and served as an assistant coach in both that sports and girls soccer at Turner Ashby before that stint.
Mongold, who graduated from Bridgewater College in 1993, plans to remain a third grade teacher at John C. Myers Elementary School in Broadway.
