BRAMBLETON- Moments after the game, Briar Woods
fans were dancing, screaming, hugging and mainly telling each other "I can't
believe we beat Broad Run" Friday night as the Falcons ended the Spartans'
33-game winning streak with a 20-13 victory.
A solid defense that shut down Broad Run's running combined with some timely
throws from quarterback Trace McSorley put Briar Woods in the driver's seat for
the Dulles District title with the victory. McSorley finished the game
completing 19 of 26 passes for 190 yards, while Ryan Bumbray buoyed the Falcon
ground attack with 92 yards on 19 carries.
In other games around the area, Dominion beat Freedom 49-3 to stay in a tie with
Briar Woods for first place in the Dulles District; Park View surprised Loudoun
County 17-7, Tuscarora won its second game this year with a 29-16 win over Hyde
Charter, Loudoun County pounded Woodgrove 51-0, Osbourn did the same to Heritage
41-14, and Stone Bridge routed Marshall 63-7.
Briar Woods jumped to an early 14-0 and never trailed in the game. Bumbray broke
free for a 27-yard touchdown run midway through the first period to make it 7-0,
then McSorley threw a swing pass to Scott Rolin, who tightroped the left
sideline for 35 yards and a touchdown to make it 14-0.
The defense against the single wing is about having gap integrity; it is about being disciplined and taking care of your responsibility," said Briar Woods Coach Charlie Pierce. "You have to attack from the defensive side with a few little nuances."
Broad Run would answer when Michael Stratton tossed a 50-yard pass to Mike Price, who fumbled the ball, then recovered it on the Briar Woods 4 to set up the first Spartan touchdown. Three times Broad Run attacked on the ground, and three times Briar Woods stopped it, but on 4th and goal, Derril Thomas made it in from the one to make it 14-7.
David Clements upped the Briar Woods lead to 17-7 with a 42-yard field goal just
before halftime, but a Spartan turnover deep in its territory set up a Broad Run
score to tighten the game when Thomas scored his second TD - again on a 4th and
goal play - to make it 17-13.
Clements would make it 20-13 with 3:05 left in the third period, and both
defenses would take take turns stopping the other. Broad Run had one last chance
when it faced a 4th and 5 from the Briar Woods 39, but Michael Stratton's pass
was intercepted by Jamal Hill to effectively end the game.
A packed Briar Woods crowd loudly celebrated the win in the bleachers after the final seconds ticked off, as the Briar Woods P.A. announcer warned fans dozens of times not to rush the field. In those cheers was more than an occasional mention of not only beating Broad Run, but ending the area's longest football winning streak ever.
"It did come up a little in the week," Pierce said of the Broad Run winning streak. "But I and the players felt it was more about what we had to do to be successful tonight."
At Dominion, Deadre Reaves scored three touchdowns on offense, and added a 4th
with an interception return for a TD as the Titans remained unbeaten in district
play to stay tied with Briar Woods for first place.
