ROANOKE -- Go ahead and call him "Worldwide Webb."

Because Sid Webb was everywhere Saturday.

The Patrick Henry senior excelled in four areas highlighted by a game-saving interception and a go-ahead touchdown pass that lifted the Patriots to a 28-14 victory over visiting Briar Woods in the opening round of the VHSL Region 5D playoffs.

Webb passed for 95 yards, ran for 40 and caught passes 32, much of it in the second half when he took over at quarterback and led PH (9-2) to a 21-point fourth quarter and a trip to face Mountain View next week in the second round.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Webb was a three-year starter at quarterback for Northside before he transferred to Patrick Henry.

With returning quarterback Joey Beasley in the fold, Webb was uncertain what role he would have, particularly on offense.

"I just wanted to come over and help guys learn, and kind of bring that experience I had," Webb said. "I know we have some guys. I knew it wasn't going to be no one-man show.

"I felt I would make an impact when I get the ball, but as far as a key role ... not too much."

Webb's biggest play Saturday came as a defensive back as Beasley started at QB and played most of the first half.

Briar Woods (7-4) led 14-7 midway through the third quarter and had the ball second-and-gold at the Patrick Henry 4-yard line.

The Falcons had used 12 running plays and just one pass to cover 72 yards on the opening drive of the second half.

However, Briar Woods called a pass play on second down and Webb sprinted across the end zone and picked off a throw by Falcons sophomore quarterback Brady Carmical for a touchback.

Briar Woods Coach Michael Burnett instantly wished he had a mulligan, but there was no second chance.

"That's definitely the game," said Burnett. "I wish I had that call back. I've got a young quarterback. He'll learn from it. We'll all learn from it."

Patrick Henry made the team from Loudoun County pay as Webb directed an 80-yard drive that ended when he reversed out of the pocket and found Isaiah Swain for a 4-yard TD pass that cut the Patriots' deficit to 14-13.

Orion Kilgannon blocked the PAT for Briar Woods, but the momentum had shifted.

Was Webb surprised the Falcons elected to pass from deep in the red zone?

"I was surprised they threw it to my side," he said.

Patrick Henry's comeback was just beginning.

The Patriots' defense got a big second-down stop by Jahzae Kimbrough and forced a punt.

It took PH just eight plays to cover 77 yards.

Arjuan "Chuck" Webb converted a third-and-15 by rambling 21 yards on a naked screen pass from Sid Webb.

Three plays later, the PH quarterback hit Carmelo Taylor on a short sideline route. The Penn State recruit and reigning Class 5 outdoor 100-meter and 200-meter champ found a wide enough alley to convert the play into a 30-yard TD and an eventual 21-14 lead.

"We just wanted the first down," Sid Webb said. "But you get a like that the ball, ain't no telling what he can do with it."

Briar Woods picked up one first down on its next possession but a critical dead-ball personal foul penalty with the ball near midfield forced the visitors to punt.

Patrick Henry took over at its 25 with 4 minutes, 44 seconds to play.

The Patriots had no intention of putting the ball in the air.

Chuck Webb, who ran for 106 yards on 19 carries including a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter, got the ball on four straight run plays.

That set the stage for the clincher as Kimbrough burst up the middle with the help of a lead block by Chuck Webb and raced 54 yards for the final score.

"You can't forget about Chuck," Patrick Henry Coach Alan Fiddler said. "You've got to get him the ball. He did a great job getting us first downs there, especially on that last drive.

Kimbrough started six games at running back when Chuck Webb was out with an ankle injury.

"He's rushed for over 700 yards," Fiddler said. "He's got 700 yards receiving. He's got 21 touchdowns. He's done it all for us."

Versatility has led to victory.

The nine wins are the most in Fiddler's 12-year tenure, equaling the highest single-season total since 1985.

Burnett is no stranger to winning. He coached Broad Run to back-to-back Division 4 state titles in 2008 and 2009, and he started the program at Tuscarora, taking that Loudoun County school to a pair of Class 5 runner-up finishes.

Saturday, Briar Woods took a 14-7 first-half lead on a 42-yard pass from Carmical to Colin Capistrant and a 5-yard run by Andrew Joyce.

However, the Falcons could not contain PH's offense in the second half with Sid Webb behind center.

"They made a good choice going to [Webb] in the second half," Burnett said. "He's a real good run threat for them. I think that really made the difference for them.

"They made the plays they needed to and we really didnt."

Fiddler was not sure what exact role the Northside transfer would have for a team blessed with talent at the skill positions, but he had an idea.

"I always thought he'd be a good offensive player for us, versatile, like he did today," Fiddler said. "He did a lot of different things.

"This the first whole half he's played, but I just felt we needed a spark. somebody that can move around a little more. He came off bench and got us going."

Patrick Henry next faces a trip to Stafford, where Mountain View ended the Patriots' 2021 season with a 42-12 drubbing.

Mountain View defeated Albemarle 49-24 in the first round. The Wildcats are led by Syracuse commit Ike Daniels at running back and linebacker Kristopher Jones, who has a number of Power 5 offers.

"Mountain View is a really good football team," Fiddler said. "We'll have to play our best."
