re-shuffled its Class of 2012 prospect rankings.  With prospect videos
arriving daily, player evaluations are an on-going process and we are pleased to
present our revised Top 25!
Briar Woods defensive back/wide receiver
Alex Carter has vaulted all the way up to the #6 spot in the latest
VirginiaPreps.com ranking of the state's top Class of 2012 football prospects.
In the site's previous rankings Carter had been slotted at #24.
Carter
helped lead the Falcons to a state title this past fall. Carter has the skills
to excel at defensive back and wide receiver, a sentiment backed up by offers
from Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Duke, Boston College, Tennessee,
Kansas State and Stanford. He may be the son of former Notre Dame defensive back
Tom Carter, but he's a top prospect in his own right. Last fall, Carter caught
eight touchdown passes and he scored one defensive touchdown. He also scored on
two kickoff returns and tallied 800 yards of total offense.
Six
prospects are making their initial debut in the revised rankings.
Checking in at #16 is Wilson "athlete"
Der'Woun Greene. A lifelong fan of the Virginia Tech football program,
Greene was excited that the Hokies were the first to offer him. A standout in
the classroom, Greene should see plenty of offers before his recruitment is
over, unless he gives Virginia Tech an early commitment.
Woodberry
Forest defensive back CJ Prosise is ranked at #17. Projects as a safety
at the college level but will likely also serve on the special teams as both a
punt and kick returner. Along with sporting an impressive frame, Prosise shows
outstanding athletic ability registering a 4.59 forty with impressive weight
room numbers including a 335-pound squat, 205-pound clean and 200-pound bench.
Woodberry Coach Clint Alexander describes his standout as an "amazing athlete.
C.J. plays receiver and safety for us and is also a punt and kick returner as
well. He had four returns for touchdowns last year. He is a special player who
attacks the ball in the air and is deceptively fast because of his long
strides."
Another
newcomer to the rankings is Christiansburg athlete Brenden Motley. Motley
is a two-sport (football and basketball) star for Christiansburg posting
1,142-yards passing and 564-yards rushing along with 17 total touchdowns and
eight interceptions. The year earned him first team all-district both ways as
well as district player of the year, second team all-region quarterback and
honorable mention all-region on defense.  Motley was also a post-season
All-State Underclassmen (Double A) pick by VirginiaPreps.com.  He
has good size (6-foot-4, 180 pounds) and should see his recruiting interest pick
up as he hits the camp and combine circuit.
A
new lineman joins the top 25, that being Hermitage standout Andre
Miles-Redmond, who this week picked up his first offer (NC State). Obviously
hia size is a big plus but Hermitage coack Patrick Kane indicated that it's the
big guy's overall play and potential that most intrigues the college coaches.
"He is extremely athletic for a kid his size. He's 260 pounds with a very small
amount of body fat so he is the kind of kid, I think, who could very easily put
on 30 or 40 pounds and carry it extremely well. We used at tackle where he was
able to reach any defensive end that he came up against. That is what shows up
most on his film."
Another
private school prospect joins the updated rankings in Norfolk Christian athlete
Mario Nixon. Last fall at Norfolk Christian, Nixon racked up 700
receiving yards and eight touchdowns as the school's go-to guy on the outside.
It's not totally clear what position Nixon is best suited for in college. What
will happen and what he wants to happen might be two different things. "I'm
hoping I get to play wide receiver," he admitted. "That's what I really want to
play."
And
the final new entry into our Top 25 is Thomas Dale wide receiver Desmond Frye.
In 2010, Frye picked off four passes, broke up another ten and recorded 56
tackles on the defensive side of the ball while grabbing 23 passes for 510 yards
and six touchdowns out of the offensive huddle. Says Thomas Dale coach Kevin
Tucker, "Desmond has big play ability at wide receiver and likes to lay the wood
at safety. He has some of the best hands I have ever seen and can jump through
the roof."
