Halloween and the High School Football season is rapidly winding down in
Virginia. There are a number of
intriguing games with major playoff implications this week.
style=> Among them, Cox plays host to Bayside,
Norview visits Booker T. Washington, Kecoughtan faces
off against Phoebus and Landstown plays
class=SpellE>Kellam.
"Verdana","sans-serif";mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>There
are sure to be plenty of tricks and treats in store for the fans.
style=> Let's get straight to the action, but first
we take a look at the Predictions Race with the 'experts' . . .
"Verdana","sans-serif";mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>
With his 21-3 mark, Young shaved a game off his deficit from second place,
where VHSL-Reference currently sits.
Hatfield increased his lead to seven games over VHSL-Reference and 10
over Coach Young by going 23-1 last week, only missing on Great
Bridge/Grassfield in a game where the Wildcats came from 11 down in the fourth
quarter to win.
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>
Game of the Week:
115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;
mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>
style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>Friday:
style=> Bayside (6-2) at Cox (6-2) . . .
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>The series
between Bayside and Cox in recent years has been lopsided in terms of who comes
out on top, but not the margin of the games.
Bayside will try to make it seven in a row over Cox and enhance their
chances of not only grabbing a home game in the first round of the playoffs,
but get the #3 seed in 6A-South. Cox,
which lost to the Marlins by seven points or less each of the past two years,
has its goal in sight of winning their first ever playoff game in school
history, and beating the Marlins would go a long way towards having that
opening round postseason match in front of their home.
"Verdana","sans-serif";mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>Offensively,
Bayside has been much better in year two under Jon White than they were in
2013. They are averaging 29.8 points per
game and have one of the top rushers in all of Tidewater in senior Daryl Sills,
the younger brother of former Salem star Kevin Whaley.
style=> For the season, Sills has rushed for 839
yards and 12 touchdowns on 117 attempts, even going over the 100-yard mark
against one of the tougher defenses around in Salem.
style=> A key reason to their offense being improved
is the fact that junior QB Donte Lampley is taking
care of the ball better and finding his receivers, such as junior Phillip
Patterson and Isaiah Pooler, in space.
"Verdana","sans-serif";mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>Quarterback
Cole Johnson will finish this season with the most passing yards in Cox
history, currently sitting at 1197 on 90 completions out of 132 attempts with a
16-5TD/Int. ratio. That gives him a QB
rating of 120. On the ground, he's also
rushed for 317 yards and 3TD's, though has lost five fumbles.
style=> Cox has a deep stable of backs and receivers
with Collin Sherman, Bradley Jones (6TD's total), C.J. Tabron
and sophomore sensation Khalan Laborn
that are all capable of moving the chains or scoring.
style=> Laborn has nine
total touchdowns this year and 596 yards from scrimmage on just 51 touches.
style=> Up front on the o-line, Rutgers commit Blake
Camper at left tackle and center Perry Schrader are the anchors for this
multi-dimensional offense that has been humming all year.
"Verdana","sans-serif";mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>On
defense, linebacker Sam Brooks has been a force for Cox with 64 total tackles
and a pair of interceptions. Matt
class=SpellE>DeMasi, Brett Madden, Jeremiah Salley
and Donnell Story have been valuable parts to a defense that has pitched three
shutouts on the year. Corner
class=SpellE>Dontrell Harrington (30 tackles, 2INT's) left with an injury
in last week's win over Green Run and his status is unknown going into this
game. For the year, the Falcons have
eight takeaways, seven coming on interceptions.
"Verdana","sans-serif";mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>As
for Bayside's defense, they will be without two of
their main playmakers in ODU commit Jamez
class=SpellE>Brickhouse, one of the Beach District's best corners who
went down with a season-ending injury in the team's comeback win over
class=SpellE>Kellam, and Rover Deshawn Doby.
style=> Patterson is a takeaway threat on the back end,
while the Marlins have been fairly stout against the run, as seen in last week's
34-0 shutout of Princess Anne and the week before when they held Green Run to
14 points, posting eight sacks in the game.
A couple of freshmen are making their mark already as LB
class=SpellE>Teradja Mitchell made 13 tackles a week ago and freshman
defensive back Armani Chatman intercepted a pass.
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>
Bayside Keys to Victory:
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>#1 - - Apply
Pressure on QB Johnson:
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>For Bayside to
win, it might require them cutting the Cox point total, which is at 30.8PPG, in
half or close to it and they have to do a couple of things in order for that to
happen. One of them is creating a
takeaway or two, and another is being able t mount a fierce pass rush on
Johnson to throw off his timing and rhythm in the pocket.
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>#2 - - Establish
Sills Early:
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>The Marlins don't
want to get behind early and play catch-up because it'll force them to throw,
potentially increasing their odds for an interception, plus may also take Sills
out of the equation. Playing a methodical
and physical brand of football while keeping the Cox offense off the field will
be critical.
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>#3 - - Win the
Field Position Battle:
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>A lot of this
will come down to the Bayside kicking game, both on punts and kickoffs.
style=> Of course, Laborn
is a dangerous return man for the Falcons, and the Marlins need to operate with
shorter fields if possible and make Cox have to drive the length of it on them
to score its points.
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>
Cox Keys to Victory:
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>#1 - - Minimize
Turnovers:
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>Although the
Falcons scored 21 points in a loss against Ocean Lakes, they could've possibly
had more as they threw two interceptions in the red zone.
style=> As Cox knows from last year's encounter,
turnovers in that area of the field can be fatal, and they probably won't be
fortunate to win on the scoreboard if they are minus-2 or minus-3 in the
turnover category.
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>#2 - - Attack
Vertically:
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>With
class=SpellE>Brickhouse and Doby out, the
Falcons will want to test the Bayside secondary over the top on a few
occasions. While the Marlins have
talents back there in Patterson (5INT's) and Chris Hunt, Cox has to feel good
about their chances of striking for a big play with Laborn,
Bradley Jones and others stepping up this year in the passing game.
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>#3 - - Stop the
Run:
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>
style=> Tackling Sills is no easy task, but if Cox is
going to give their home fans something to cheer about by night's end, they
have to limit his big runs and force Bayside to throw the football on third
down. He's one of the more powerful and
effective running backs in the area, capable of winning the game for the
Marlins with a 150-200 yard-night if the defense isn't ready to stop him.
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin'>
Closing Thoughts: As mentioned earlier,
Cox has traditionally played Bayside tough, even leading them at half-time in
the fog of the 2010 Eastern Region Division 6 Playoffs as a #8 seed before
succumbing. These two teams know what's
at stake, being able to open up at home in the first round.
style=> That's a much better situation than having to
travel to Western Branch or Kecoughtan.
style=> On the flip side, a loss doesn't hurt either
a ton. Without Brickhouse
and Doby on defense, the Marlins are going to have to
count on underclassmen to make key plays, and the Cox offense might be able to
make that one extra play to get them over the hump.
style=> Anything other than a close battle would be
surprising here.

Thursday: Hampton (6-3) at Bethel (5-4)
. . .
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>This one is huge for Bethel and its playoff hopes in
Group 6A-South, where they are currently battling it out with
class=SpellE>Landstown for the #8 seed. The Bruins have shown
promise by beating Heritage and nearly upending Phoebus in a game where they
led by double-figures, though did suffer lopsided losses to Western Branch,
Woodside and Kecoughtan - three teams that figure to
make the playoffs in Group 6A. Offensively, they have the third leading
rusher in the Peninsula District in Quinton Lee (160Att. 935Yds. 14TD's) as
well as a lethal receiver/return man in Darrell Brown that has returned three
kicks for touchdowns already this year. On defense, they will count on LB
Aaron Edwards and CB T.C. Chisley to be playmakers.
As for Hampton, the Crabbers actually had a losing record at one in this
season, 2-3 when they lost to Phoebus 19-8. They've re-grouped behind the
dual-threat exploits of junior quarerback
class=SpellE>Jovonn 'Bubba' Quillen, who
recently became only the third Peninsula District player ever to run for over
1000 yards and pass for over 1000 yards in the same season. He should get
help with the return of RB Demetrius Strickland from injury, and
class=SpellE>wideout Tyquon Wilkins is an
electric player on the edge. At times, the Crabbers have been porous
defensively, but have also gotten key takeaways from LB Ricky Hatcher and
Wilkins, among others.

Gloucester (0-9) at Menchville (1-8) . . .
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>There's
very little, to nothing, on the line in this one. The Monarchs got off to
a strong start to the season when they trumped Maury 28-7, but have since dropped
eight in a row and don't look to be headed to the playoffs in Group 5A-South.
Gloucester is trying to notch its first and only win of the year in the
regular season finale. The closest they've gotten was an overtime loss to
Warwick. Even though they lost to Hampton 49-10 last week, the Monarchs
showed some offensive punch when TE Elijah Murphy broke off a long touchdown
reception. Backs Malik Dixon, Torey Guilford and Richard Smith can be
adequate in spots, especially against a Dukes defense that is pretty generous,
allowing 42.1 points per game. Top rusher Devon Pullen (160Car. 642Yds.
3TD's) will have to step up in a big way for Gloucester and get some help for
the Dukes to avoid finishing in the basement of the Peninsula District.

offensively the past four weeks with just seven points in each of those
contests, including getting stopped in the red zone by Kellam
in a game where the defense did its job in holding the Knights to only 14
points. They will count on their defense
again, led by LB's Dominic Floyd and Bodie Sheehan,
against a Green Run team that isn't lacking in the playmaker or speed
departments. Quarterback Austin Lynch
(1759Yds. 9-10TD/Int. ratio) is approaching 2000 yards through the air with
class=SpellE>wideouts Kyree Johnson (41Rec. 579Yds.), Tim Norwood
(33Rec. 390Yds. 3TD's) and Jamie Mitchell giving defenses fits.
style=> The main key for Jeff McGowan's Stallions is
up front, where they have to be able to keep the First Colonial pass rush at
bay and open up enough running lanes for junior halfback Bre'Lynd

of Tommy Reamon can take a giant step forward getting
in the playoffs by beating Kellam before taking on
Green Run in the regular season finale.
Quarterback Bryson Stukes leads all Hampton
Roads players in passing yards with 1785 to go with an 8-6TD/Int. ratio, and
ODU commit Quincy Watts has been as good as advertised with 51 receptions for a
whopping 891 yards and five scores. They've
mixed in Justin Ford on the ground quite a bit, too.
style=> Tailback Maliek
Baker of Kellam went for over 200 yards in a game
earlier this season, and it's clear that Chris DeWitt's Knights have to play
ball-control and milk the click to further solidify their postseason situation in
5A-South with a win. The two main
questions in this game are will the Kellam defense be
able to stop the pass and how well can Landstown
contain the Knights' running game? Those
answers should tell the outcome.

six games above .500 and still in position to claim the #1 seed in the
Tidewater portion of the playoff bracket in 5A-South, the SunDevils
haven't been the same team since Virginia Tech commit and defensive terror
Trevor Hill has been out of the lineup.
Offensively, they haven't been able to give RB Malik Butts (170Car.
1019Yds. 14TD's) as much running room in recent weeks, QB Jarrel
Lightbody has seen his INT's (8) creep above his TD
passes (6), and the defense gave up 22 in a loss to Landstown
before responding with a shutout of Princess Anne.
style=> Coach Robert Jackson is hoping the bye week
allowed them to correct some mistakes going into a matchup with a
class=SpellE>Tallwood team that beat them last year and is averaging
26.4PPG over the past five weeks. The
main question is if Lions RB Keonte Yorkshire

style=> Second-year Head Coach Dealton
Cotton has the Pilots flying high, and although the school has had some
off-the-field issues with fights going on (none
involving football players to our knowledge) that has moved the start time
of this game up, this team is generating quite a bit of buzz as one that could
play deep into November when the playoffs begin.
style=> Senior QB E.J. Faison has thrown for 1242
yards and 13 touchdowns to go with a number of key plays in the running
game. His two primary receivers, D.J.
Johnson (32Rec. 487Yds. 6TD's) and De'Shawn Brown
(27Rec. 394Yds. 2TD's) have played at an All-Conference/All-District
level. Booker

Head Coach Ronnie Ratliff, the Wilson Presidents have not only broken a 39-game
losing streak this season, but notched a pair of wins and have a chance to
actually reach the playoffs if they're able to win their final two regular
season games. That means beating
Portsmouth rival Churchland for the first time since
2004. The Truckers don't have RB Jamil
Edwards anymore this year after he sustained a broken collarbone, meaning they
have to depend on QB Corey Gause to generate offense
for them even more. If Wilson's
defenders can contain his main targets, like Terrence Harris for example, that
will bode well for them and give their own tailback, Jamonta
Williams (89Car. 732Yds. 4TD's) a chance to get closer to that 1000-yard

Hornets have been shutout in half of their games, including in last week's 40-0
loss to Indian River. Prior to that,
they did score 19 against Great Bridge with QB Terrence Shambry
accounting for three touchdowns. In
order to make the playoffs, Lakeland cannot afford to lose this game and next

Corey Gray (18TD's rushing) of Western Branch was held under 60 yards on the

Nansemond River had over 150 yards in penalties in last week's 21-17 win

Denbigh would like to enhance its postseason chances and seeding with an
