Showdown in the Mountains: 7x7 Tournament!

Galax Head Football Coach Jared Van Acker coordinated the second annual
"Showdown in the Mountains" 7X7 Tournament this past weekend. Following the

event Coach Van Acker took time to talk with VirginiaPreps.com about the
results.
"The 16-team tournament went very well and had
a lot of great competition. Jefferson Forest came determined to show that
they were the best team and won the championship game against Cave Spring
in overtime! The overtime format I chose for the tournament was a 1 play
'mono e mono' you score offense wins you get denied defense wins.  Cave
Spring won the coin toss and chose offense.  Jefferson Forest liked the
choice because they were sound all day on defense with linebacker Andrew
Brown taking care of the middle and defensive back Colby Rhodes (Defensive Player of
tournament) ball-hawking the secondary with multiple INT's. Pass was
deflected and incomplete earning Jefferson Forest the championship!"
Van Acker added "Cave Spring had a
tremendous showing and had every spectator and player on the front of
their seats with their offensive passing arsenal they put on display.
Tournament Offensive Player was the quarterback from Cave Spring, Josh Woodrum, who
slung the pigskin all over the place and with accuracy. His day was
highlighted with a couple of fantastic finishes and acrobatic catches by
his WR's in their upset in early round of playoffs with then unbeaten
Richlands."
Of course Coach had to get props in for the
'home' team, telling us "Galax Maroon Tide play was highlighted by the
pass-catch junior-to-be duo of quarterback Terrance "Boobie" Mazon and
wide receiver Jerad
Brown. They made many spectacular plays with one another and will be an
intriguing combo for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, we had a major
case of "drop-itis" in which many accurate passes were often dropped
causing drives to stall. Mazon showed off his arm strength and accuracy
which will only be accented with his running ability from the quarterback position
in the spread we run during the football season."
All in all another fantastic "Showdown in the
Mountains" and we appreciate Coach Van Acker taking the time to share his
observations and for providing the photos!
