Bay Rivers District Champion
Region I Runner-up
The Skinny:
The Panthers return to the Group AA State Tournament on the strength of several come-from-behind wins in district, region and state tournament competition. Burton's trademark half-court trapping defenses, as well as, their precision, execution in their Flex Offense, have been factors in their success this season. Their Trap-5 defense, produced 22 turnovers in their 40-37 loss to Greensville County in the Region I championship game and in their quarter-final victory over Charlottesville, they forced 31 turnovers, 19 of which, in the 2nd half. They averaged 28 turnovers per game during the regular season.
Bruton is led by the Bay Rivers District Player of the Year, senior, Jen
Falin. She was an eighth-grader when Bruton High's girls' basketball team last played for the Group AA state championship. In addition to providing leadership, Falin leads the team in scoring with 18 points per game.
It has also been the play of freshmen Sharmaine Baker that has helped propelled Burton to their upset victories over high-powered teams, James Monroe and Charlottesville. She is averaging 12 points and eight rebounds a game in the playoffs and gives the Panthers a legitimate force in the paint. Against James Monroe, she consistently powered the ball to the basket against the Jacket defenders, during a key 14-4 run in the third period. In the Charlottesville game, it was her ability to foul-out standout post, Shalita Brown, the Jefferson District player of the year, which proved to be a critical and decisive difference in the game. Baker also played her best basketball in the regional tournament run, scoring 17 points against James Monroe and 15 against Greensville, respectfully.
Panther Key Players:
Jen Falin, Letitia Fowler, Shariece Samuel, Jen Rolley, Luci Legaspi, Rebecca Ellis and Sharmaine Baker.
Other notables:
Coach Wayne Burnette has more than 400 victories coaching the school's boys and girls teams, and guided the Panthers to numerous Bay Rivers District championships, as well as, 10 straight trips to the Region I playoffs as his biggest accomplishment.
