Oaks Win In Double OT

Senior Kyonze Chavis drained a game-tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation, and Adam Grant was clutch in the second overtime as Norfolk Collegiate won a big TCIS showdown with a 71-59 double overtime win over Walsingham Academy. The Oaks trailed by 10 points (52-42) with 2:05 remaining in the game but took advantage of three turnovers and 3-pointers by Chavis and Grant to pull Norfolk Collegiate to within four.

"Seniors," Norfolk Collegiate head coach Jim Markey said. "This year, they refuse to lose. They are just tough, hard nose kids who play really hard and when they have to, they dig down deep and show some heart and leave it all on the floor."

Wake Forest commit Richard Washington made a free throw for Walsingham Academy to extend the Trojans lead to three with 19.9 seconds to go but Chavis dribbled around and created enough space for a pull-up three to tie the game at 55.

"It was either me, Bash or Adam," Chavis said about the game-tying basket. " Whoever was going to get the shot, was going to make it. The basket just looked real big when I put it up and I was able to knock it down. It feels good knowing my shot put is in overtime and that we can beat a top seed going into the tournament."

"We were trying to pick and pop for Bash (Townes) and they were covering it," Markey said. "Adam came off the screen and it was good he didn't take the contested shot. K got the ball and he had to take the contested shot. We were probing for the best shot and K had to hit a very tough one."

The 1st overtime was devoid of scoring with a combined four points on one field goal. Norfolk Collegiate struck first in the 2nd overtime on a Jakeim Robertson layup off a pass from James Hurley followed by a steal and layup from Chavis for a 61-57 lead. Grant made 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch and the Oaks scored the games final eight points to pull out the win.

Bash Townes led Norfolk Collegiate with 20 points including 14 points in the first three quarters to keep the Oaks in the game. Chavis finished with 16 points and nine boards while Grant added 15 points including two treys. Senior Dusan Vicentic led all scorers with 22 points while Washington added 17 points and 16 rebounds. Freshman Jaylin Stewart contributed 12 points and five rebounds.

Norfolk Collegiate takes on undefeated Green Run (19-0) on Saturday, February 6th in the 8th Annual VirginiaPreps.com Classic at Green Run.
