Landstown, which entered 22-2 overall and riding a 17-game winning streak, was ranked in the Top 5 in Group AAA in both the latest VirginiaPreps.com and Associated Press rankings. The Eagles got five three-pointers and 18 points in the first half from Beach District Player of the Year Julian Norfleet in bolting to the early lead.
But Nansemond River made its rally, sinking clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter and holding Norfleet and fellow All-Beach performer D.J. Woodmore to a combined four points in the second half.
Senior guard Brian Clarke led the Warriors with 20 points and he got plenty of help from the likes of Morris Johnson, Ashton Moore, Kerrington Harris and others.
Johnson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. He also shot 7-of-10 from the field and dished out six assists. Harris had 13 points and shot 3-of-6 from three-point land, including one with under a mintue to go to push the team's lead to four. Moore chipped in 10 points and three steals.
The Warriors had entered the game as the #4 seed from the Southeastern District and had a 14-10 overall record. Nansemond River was 2-9 against teams with a winning record before pulling the upset.
Landstown's two previous losses came in a December holiday tournament in New York. They had not given up more than 60 points to a Virginia team all season long, and their defense was giving up the fewest points per game (45) in the entire Eastern Region.
