Martinsville broke the V.H.S.L record for state basketball championships

by winning its 11th Group AA State Title in 2000-01 and went on to break its
own record by winning number 12 in 2001-02.  The first dates back to
1957-58 when the Bulldogs went 22-3 and gave the late Coach Mel Cartwright his
first of 3 state titles at Martinsville followed up by 2 more
in 1960-61 and 1963-64.  Martinsville's reins were then taken over
by Coach Robert " Husky" Hall who went on to win 7 state
championships.  Following his retirement, long-time assistant Coach Troy
Wells took over the program and has won back-to-back state titles on 2000-01
and 2001-02.

How has this been done - the ingredients are
basically made up of 5 things:  pride, playing hard,
together, and unselfishly  and the number 1 reason for success
- DEFENSE.

Over the past  47
years, the Bulldogs have had only 3 head coaches.  The 12 state
championship teams have complied a record of  284-30 with 11 of those
losses coming in one season from the 1965-66 team dubbed the "mumps
squad."  The top 7 players were out over half the season with the
mumps and the team entered the district tournament with a record of 7-11 and
finished the year at 12-11 as state champions.
