High School was unable to make the playoffs this past season in football, but
the Eagles every year churn out a number of prospects for the next level.
style=> Among them in the Class of 2014 is 6-foot-5,
250-pound lineman Owen
class=SpellE>Obasuyi.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>With National Signing Day less than a week away,
class=SpellE>Obasuyi decided to end the recruiting process and give a
verbal commitment to play his College Football for the nearby
style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>Hampton University Pirates under new
Head Coach Connell Maynor.
style=>
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>The Tidewater talent drew interest from East Carolina,
class=SpellE>Elon, Howard, James Madison, Liberty, Maine, Old Dominion,
Richmond, Temple and Towson. In the end,
he didn't want to go far from home.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"The reason I chose to go to Hampton is because it's
close for my mother, sister, brother and my little nephew to get to my games,"
class=SpellE>Obasuyi told VirginiaPreps.com.
style=> "I formed a great bond with the new coaches and
they made me feel like I was already apart of the family.
style=> Also, their academics are outstanding and
will prepare me for my life after college."
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>For the Eagles, Obasuyi
played a key role in the trenches both offensively and defensively.
style=> Where will he line up at in the MEAC?
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"They're looking for me to play defensive end," he
answered. "They told me they loved my
athleticism and how explosive I am off the ball."
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>During his senior season with the Eagles,
class=SpellE>Obasuyi finished with just over 100 tackles, nearly 20
sacks and forced six turnovers. He was
named First Team All-Beach District and Second Team All-Tidewater at defensive
end.
115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Obasuyi
style='font-size:9.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>,
who clocked in a 4.9-40 and squats 385, also earned Second Team All-Beach
District recognition at offensive tackle.
As a junior, he was chosen Second Team All-Beach on the defensive side
of the ball.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"What I believe is the strength of my game is my hunger
to get to the quarterback, my speed and my agility from playing basketball
along with my aggression," Obasuyi commented.
style=> "Being in the weight room has helped e a
lot. But as I reach the next level, I am
going to have to get stronger, faster and take my skill past what it is now."
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Coach Maynor previously coached
at Winston-Salem State University, helping make the Rams a title contender at
the Division II level. He replaces
Donovan Rose, who went 25-30 in five seasons at the helm at Hampton
University. The Pirates haven't won more
than six games since finishing 10-2 overall in 2006 under Joe Taylor.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Jumping in under a new coaching staff, a chance for
early playing time is a distinct possibility for Obasuyi.
style=> What can Pirates fans look for from the
Virginia Beach product?
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"They're going to see me perform to be the best of my
abilities, will see a hard worker and a beast," he said.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>In college, Obasuyi plans to
major in business and marketing. His
class=SpellE>Landstown teammate, linebacker
normal'>Isaiah Martin, recently announced he will play his College Football
at Bluefield.
