Lancaster Honored
Highland Springs head basketball coach George Lancaster was honored for all he has done for the Central Virginia community both on and off the court. The presentation was made at the 2014 Lawson Classic before John Marshall/Armstrong game. Lancaster has 657 career wins which is 2nd all-time in the state of Virginia. He has coached Highland Springs to AAA state titles in 2003 and 2007 and he was inducted into the VHSL Hall of Fame Inductee.
"I'm humble and grateful," Lancaster said after receiving the award. "What it does is speak for the longevity I've had and I've enjoyed every moment. I have great administrators, great community backing, the parents, great players...I have a lot of great friends who have helped me. Roles models like Bill Lawson Jr who was a great friend and certainly I've pattern a lot of things from him."
"Bill Littlepage, Guy Davis over at Henrico, John Bonsavage...those are the people who have helped me formulate my philosophy on how basketball should be played. I've tried to use my work ethic and my personality to help the kids develop their skills and the qualities to carry on in life and I'm pleased with that."
Lancaster played college basketball at Virginia State and landed his first coaching job in Mechlenburg County after graduating college. He had an inkling that coaching would be in his future even as a player at Virginia State.
"I'm not saying I was a great player even though my picture is up on the wall here for the Hall of Fame," he said jokingly. "When I was here playing, I coached one of the intramural teams the Crushers and we won a couple of state championships. I just knew I was going to be a basketball coach and a teacher. That's what I really wanted to do. Basketball coaching is secondary to basketball teaching so I want to believe that I'm a decent basketball teacher."
