High School Sports Talk Presented by VirginiaPreps.com airs each and every Saturday from 10 AM EST to Noon on ESPN Radio 94.1, hosted by Matthew Hatfield and Coach Ed Young.
To open the show, Matt and Ed went around the opening round playoff results involving teams from Hampton Roads. That included two overtime matchups - Oscar Smith rallying to beat Cox and Lakeland upsetting Norcom.
Lakeland Head Football Coach Kevin Knight came on around the 26:30 mark to talk about his seventh-seeded Cavaliers taking down the second-seeded Greyhounds in overtime, 10-7, in Portsmouth. Lakeland was the lone #7 or #8 seed to win in the first round of the playoffs in all of VHSL football this year. It was Lakeland's fourth playoff win since 2015.
At the 39:15 mark of the program, Smithfield Head Football Coach Reginald Chavis came on to talk about the Packers rallying for a 15-8 victory over Lake Taylor. For the Packers, it was only their third ever playoff win and first since 2012. They'll next visit King's Fork.
Woodside Head Football Coach Danny Dodson was a guest at the 53:30 mark, chatting about his Wolverines and their 29-7 postseason triumph over Bayside. The Wolverines generated four takeaways and racked up over 400 yards of offense in the win, their sixth straight after a 2-3 start to the season.
A playback interview with Nansemond River Head Football Coach David Coccoli aired at the 1:12:20 mark. Coccoli's Warriors beat Princess Anne 21-6, notching their first playoff win since 1995.
To close the show, Matt and Ed take a look at next week's second round playoff matchups.
