Gretna Defeats Monticello For Division 3 Crown
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Rico Reynolds ran for 153 yards and four touchdowns and
Gretna completed its climb from worst to perfect Saturday, beating Monticello
48-18 in the VHSL's Group AA Division 3 state championship game.
It is the first football state championship for the Hawks (14-0), who set a
VHSL record with 43 consecutive losses during the 1990s. Monticello finished
11-3.
Reynolds scored three times in the first half when Gretna took a 28-6 lead.
He finished with 18 carries, including scoring runs of 20, 15, 10 and 13
yards.
Junior quarterback Vic Hall, who has committed to Virginia, piled up 308
yards in total offense. Hall, the first VHSL player to eclipse 4,000 yards in
a season, rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns on 22 attempts and completed
13 of 24 passes for 131 yards.
Joseph Sanford was 14-for-24 for 196 yards and scored on 1-yard run for
Monticello. Sanford threw a 10-yard TD pass to Chris Passantin and a 2-yarder
to Joseph Roller.
Brandon Turner caught seven passes for 59 yards for the Hawks, and Marlon
Moon scored Gretna's final touchdown on a 33-yard run.
