face familiar to some Stallions from the past to guide their football
team. Former assistant coach and
defensive coordinator Jeff McGowan
has been named Green Run's new Head Football Coach, Student Activities
Coordinator Ryan O'Meara told
VirginiaPreps.com on Friday.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"Jeff is a proven football coach who always has the
best interest of the kids at heart," commented O'Meara.
style=> "I expect he'll do great things here at Green
Run."
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>This is McGowan's second stint as a Head Football Coach
in the Beach District. From 2003-06, he
was the Head Coach at Kempsville, compiling a record
of 25-15.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>McGowan, 38, last year was the Head Football Coach at
Bayside Middle. But the itch to return
to the High School ranks stayed with him, and he wanted to scratch it if given
the chance.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"I got the bug again and missed being around kids.
style=> Going to games on Friday nights, I'm not one
to sit in the stands and know I have to be on the sidelines," McGowan said.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>The first person to send McGowan a text message congratulating
him on his new gig was Kevin Simmons, a former standout running back he coached
at Kempsville.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>McGowan's familiarity with Green Run and the Beach District
should serve as a benefit. He previously
spent three years as an assistant with Shawn
Wilson, who recently stepped down after six seasons as the Stallions' Head
Coach. Wilson went 37-25 at the helm,
taking over a program that had gone 2-58 in the 60 games before his arrival
with five straight winless seasons.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Green Run is coming off a 2-8 record in 2011, although
McGowan sees promise with the program and some of the players returning, such
as running back Anthony Scott, who rushed for over 1000 yards last season and
already holds an offer from West Virginia.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"I need to get those athletes out there on the football
field, and watching some of the basketball games and seeing the athletic ability
that they have, those kids can help you win a lot of football games.
style=> McGowan said.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"The main thing that attracted me to the job is the
type of kids over there. Those are my
type of kids. The kids at Green Run are
hungry, they don't quit on you and they will fight all the way.
style=>
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>In addition for trying to get the program back to the
playoffs, getting players on to the next level will be a goal of his.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"If they're able to get a scholarship then that opens
up a door they didn't have," McGowan added.
"I grew up a lot like those kids over there, and I want to be able to
give them opportunities to succeed in life with football being a key ingredient
because it gives them something to work for, strive for and the camaraderie you
have working with other student athletes is invaluable.
style=> I've had success in the past of getting kids
into school, have great relationships with college coaches and am going to do
as much as I can to help them."
