an old, yet familiar face.
style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>Gary Hall is returning to his alma
mater for the second time and said he plans for it to be the final stop in his
decorated coaching career.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"This is where I belong.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> It's my school, my community and my
home. I'm so fortunate and blessed to
have the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to me during
my entire lifetime and where I'm comfortable," Hall told VirginiaPreps.com.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"I was born and raised in Herndon.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Herndon recently celebrated its 100th year anniversary
as a High School and I was telling someone of those 100 years, I think I've
seen 46 years of athletics. I remember
sitting on the car hood and watching baseball games with my dad when I was four
years old. It's great to be back."
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Prior to becoming the Head Coach at Herndon the first
go-around, Hall was an assistant coach at South Lakes, where he spent four
seasons with the Seahawks as a varsity assistant.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> His final year was the 1988-89 season, which
was the junior year of NBA player Grant Hill.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>In 18 seasons at Herndon, Hall put together a 319-136
record with a Northern Region Championship and six Concorde District
titles. His best team while there came
in 2005-06 when the Hornets were led by guard Scottie Reynolds, an All-American
at Villanova, and lost to Booker T. Washington, 55-51 in the Group AAA State
Championship.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Following that loss, Hall decided to retire from
coaching basketball. However, it was
brief. After taking some time off from
the game to watch daughters Morgan and Ashley play their basketball at Briar
Woods High School, Hall got the itch to do some coaching again.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He then resurfaced at Notre Dame Academy,
which would soon became Middleburg Academy.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Hall compiled a 26-5 record in his one season at
Middleburg Academy in 2010-11. That team
was led by forward Mo Alie-Cox (VCU) and
class=SpellE>Nik Brown (Longwood), and fell to Norfolk Christian in the
VISAA State Championship game.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>A seven-time Concorde District Coach of the Year
recipient, Hall replaces Chris Whelan,
who stepped down in April because of family reasons and an increasingly busy
work schedule.Whelan went 73-38 during
his five-year tenure on the job. Hall
was an assistant with Whelan and the Hornets last season as they finished 10-14
overall and lost to Thomas Edison, 71-59 in the opening round of the Northern
Region playoffs.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"Having been here last year as an assistant to Chris
certainly helps in the transition because I'm very familiar with the personnel
and the region," noted Hall. "It gave me
a chance to get acclimated again with the landscape of the Northern Region.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Last year, it was good for me to kind of take
a step back, help Chris and be involved, but what it did was reconfirmed my
commitment and desire to be a Head Coach."
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Herndon is expected to contend for a regional crown and
State Tournament berth next season with the 1-2 punch of point guard
style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>Will Ferguson and Class of 2014 wing
style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>Dorian Johnson, another D-1 caliber
prospect, returning for the Hornets.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'> "To continue the
program that Chris has built and be able to come full circle and finish my career
where it started is kind of surreal," Hall said.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"I wanted to be a Head Coach and entertained
opportunities. Most coaches spend their
entire career hoping for that dream job.
My dream job happened to be the first job I ever had, and now to be
fortunate enough to have a second opportunity at my dream job, that's pretty
special."
