For the first time since 2019 - before the pandemic and COVID-19 - every State Championship game was held at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond.

Taking home State Championships were Hayfield, Highland Springs, Varina, Cave Spring, John Marshall and Auburn.

Hayfield was the only one of those six to wrap up a perfect season, finishing 32-0 overall.

The '804' area code celebrated three teams winning State Championships. For Highland Springs, it was their third state title since 2007. For, Varina it was their second in five years. John Marshall now has 10 State Championships, four of which have occurred since 2014.

Auburn shared the title in 2020 with Mathews, so this one was a trophy they got to hoist and enjoy and ditto for Cave Spring, now four-time State Champs since 2002.

The most ironic thing of all: no repeat State Champs from the shortened 2020-21 season when Centreville, Stone Bridge, Smithfield, Hopewell, Union and Parry McCluer were the final teams standings. Union was the only one of those six to make it back to the State Playoffs, where they were ousted in double-overtime by James River Buchanan.
