Virginia Beach, VA -- Six days after the Fairfax Stars 15 and under girls’ team won the 2003 AAU National Championship in Virginia Beach, the Fairfax Stars 13 year olds won the 13 & Under Girls AAU National Championship Tournament in Dayton, OH. Additionally, the Fairfax Star’s 11U girls team finished 5th in the 11U AAU National Championships.
For the 15U team, this was their 3rd national championship in 6 years. They had won championships at 10U, 13U, and now this year’s 15U tournament. In fact, the 15U team has never finished below 3rd place.
This year’s team had to win the championship by playing 3 games in the loser’s bracket on Friday. They won the loser’s bracket by defeating the Texas Lady Jammers by 20 points, 72-52, setting the stage for a rematch against the #2 ranked Air Oklahoma Stars, who had defeated them in overtime, 73-69 to send them to the loser’s bracket.
The championship is a double-elimination format for the tournament. Since the team from Oklahoma had not loss, the Virginia team had to win two games to win the championship.
The Fairfax Stars won a tenacious game Saturday morning, setting up a rematch game for the 15U Girls AAU National Championship Saturday afternoon. In the championship game, Marissa Coleman, Brittney Mitch and Abby Robertson led a balanced team effort. When it was over, the Stars had a hard-fought victory and another AAU National Championship, winning by 15 points, and bringing home the gold trophy for the 3rd time.
The 15U team is coached by Rene DeVarney (W. T. Woodson High School Varsity Girls Head Coach).
