"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Nansemond River shooting guard Shannon Evans was one of nine seniors on the Warriors' basketball
team this past winter that won its first Southeastern District Tournament title
since 2007 and reached the Eastern Region Tournament quarterfinal round for a
third consecutive year.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Being courted by such Division I College Basketball
programs as High Point, Jacksonville and Winthrop, Evans will spend the next
year facing some pretty stiff competition at
style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"I chose Hargrave because
Coach Hamilton is an extremely good coach and he knows what it takes to get to
the next level. I believe with the hard
work I'm willing to put in that when I leave Hargrave
I will be glad I made the decision to go there," the 6-foot-1 Evans told
VirginiaPreps.com.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"The coaches like the way I shoot and also the way I
carry myself on the court. I need to
improve on my ball-handling and be able to change the tempo in games."
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Over the last two seasons, Nansemond River has gone
42-11 overall and 30-6 in the Southeastern District.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Much of their success can be attributed to sterling
play in the backcourt, where they featured the likes of Evans,
style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>Ashton Moore (who just finished his
freshman season at The Citadel) and Dontrell
class=SpellE>Brite (Mount Olive College NC).
style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>As a senior, Evans averaged 19 points, 5.0 rebounds,
4.2 assists and 2.6 steals per game on his way to being picked All-Southeastern
District First Team and Honorable Mention All-Eastern Region.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Evans also shot 46% from the field, 44% from
three-point territory, and 70% from the foul line while throwing down 11 dunks.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"Shannon has improved each year of his High School
career here with us, going from someone that didn't see the floor much during
his sophomore and freshman years, to being one of the better offensive players
and guards in the region last season," commented Nansemond River Head
Basketball Coach Ed Young.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"He has become one of the better shooters in school
history and ended his career with over 900 points.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He improved more so on the defensive end of
the court, where he had struggled some up to this year.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Going the prep route should only help his
game, and I feel he'll have a good college career with a great opportunity to
go Division I."
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Evans sees the growth in his game, particularly at the
defensive end of the floor. He teamed
with Brite to make up one of the best backcourts in
the state this year.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"I had to step up and be more of a leader," he
admitted. "Two years ago, I would just
want to score, but now I want to also be known as a defender and help my team
out in other areas."
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>As he prepares to play at the D-1 level in 2013, Evans
looks to make the most of his upcoming situation at Hargrave
so that he's able to be a contributor for whichever college program he selects.
"Verdana","sans-serif"'>"My dream ever since I was a youngster was to make it
to the NCAA Tournament and upset Duke or UNC," noted Evans, who leaves for
class=SpellE>Hargrave on August 26.
"My hopes of going D-1 are high, but only hard work can get me there, so
I'm willing to do it on the court as well as in the classroom.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I feel like at Hargrave
the sky is the limit."
