Donavan Jackson ran for over 200 yards to help Covenant defeat Blessed Sacrament Huguenot 29-20 on Saturday afternoon. Jackson finished the night with 21 carries for 201 yards rushing and three touchdown runs. His touchdown runs covered 5, 12, and 41 yards.
Covenant trailed 7-0 after Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot took the opening kickoff and drove 72-yards in 12 plays which ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Noah Dowdy to Joshua Chisolm.
The Eagles answered on their first possession with a 80-yard 10-play drive. Jacob Smith scooted around the left on a a sweep for the touchdown however the extra point was missed. Smith finished with 56 yards on five carries.
Dive, Dive, Dive
After a scoreless second quarter, Covenant completed three drives scoring on their 1st three second half possessions. Jackson ran the same dive play and the Knights were unable to stop him. He finished with 138 yards in the second half alone. His 41-yard touchdown run with 6:40 to remaining in the game put the Eagles ahead 29-14.
Some of the credit has to go seniors Ben Arrington (guard) and Joe Payne (center) who opened enough space for the quick hitters through the heart of the Knights defense. Quarterback Nicholas Sanker completed only 2 of 3 passes for 23 yards but he ran for 110 yards on 16 carries.
Knights Close the Gap
Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot made the game interesting with a great throw on a go route from Dowdy to junior receiver Chris Gupton with 53.5 seconds to go. The touchdown cut the lead to 29-20 but the 2-point scramble from Dowdy was stopped by Arrington just short of the endzone.
Dowdy finished 13 of 19 passing for 139 yards and three touchdown passes. Chisolm finished with four receptions for 92 yards and two touchdown receptions.
