If defense wins championships, then the Class of 2012 from the state of
Virginia could be a contender because the rising senior class in the
Commonwealth is heavy with defensive standouts and deeper on that side of the
The glamour position among the ranked prospects is defensive line where players
with their hands in the dirt occupy the number 2, 4, 7, 11, 13 and 19 spots and
they are closely followed by a strong corps of linebackers who hold down the 6,
8, 10, 12 and 18 positions. In total, that means that over half of the top
twenty players ranked play in the defensive front seven.
One of the biggest leap up the rankings from the initial VirginiaPreps.com
rankings belongs to Briar Woods cornerback Alex Carter who moved from #24 in the
February release but has jumped to the #3 spot here in June after impressing at
combines throughout the state and committing to Stanford University.
Among the offensive weapons in the class, both Clover Hill's Joel Caleb and
Oscar Smith's J.C. Coleman were expected to rank among the most highly-recruited
prospects in the state and each held their positions in June rankings with Caleb
at the top spot and Coleman in the #5 position.
