VirginiaPreps can confirm what has been spreading like wildfire this morning that Coach David Bedwell is stepping down as Head Football Coach at L.C. Bird to become Athletic Director of the school.
Bedwell led the Skyhawks to three consecutive state titles from 2012-14 and posted a gaudy record of 180-30 in 17 seasons at the helm. He arrived at Bird in 2000 after leading Henrico to the Division 5 State Championship game the previous season in 1999.
During Bedwell's coaching tenure at Bird, the Skyhawks never had a losing record with their worst finish coming in 2006 at 8-3 overall. They missed the playoffs only once under his guidance and won 27 of their 41 postseason contests.
The 2016 Skyhawks finished 11-2 overall, bowing out in the regional semifinals to eventual 5A State Champ Highland Springs 34-20. Bedwell was named the Conference 12 Coach of the Year.
Early on Monday morning, Bedwell met with his players at L.C. Bird to inform them of his decision.
This obviously is a huge development and leaves a void to a Bird football program considered not only one of the best within the 804 area, but among the most successful in the whole state of Virginia. One can count on this job being the most sought after in a while, perhaps in the history of High School Football within the Richmond Region.
