On a breezy, spring day, Menchville looked to stay perfect on the gridiron, while Warwick aimed to avenge a loss earlier in the week to Hampton.
Both teams came in with the race to get in the Region 4A playoffs on their mind, and what developed was a defensive tug-of-war between the two Newport News rivals on Saturday afternoon at Todd Stadium
In a game that ended with a total of nine points, both star running backs went for over 70 yards as Warwick sophomore Bryce Buchanan went for 101 and Menchville's Javoni Hales went for 72, yet neither scored.
In the rare game without an offensive score, Warwick struck early with a Kysaun Jones pick-six in the first quarter. That would be all the scoring until Hales forced a Warwick fumble into the end zone, recovered for a safety.
Whatever the score, Warwick Head Coach Corey Hairston just wants to win.
"Those points don't matter... 7-2, 3-2, it doesn't matter," Hairston remarked. "We came out with a victory and we give God the glory for it," Hairston remarked. "Our kids played hard, it was a good defensive battle from both sides, the score doesn't matter."
