VirginiaPreps.com has released its listing of the

School and Prep School basketball players for the upcoming season.
Atop the listing is Josh Smith a 6’8” combination forward who has
verbally committed to Indiana who attends
Oak
Hill
Academy. There has been a lot of discussion
that Smith may by-pass college altogether and go straight to the NBA – ah-la
Lebron James. The site’s #2 rated player is Isaiah Swann who played last year
at Oak Hill and is ‘prepping’ this season at
Hargrave
Military
Academy. Swann has given a verbal
commitment to the Florida State Seminoles. The
highest rated ‘public school’ player on the list is Marquie Cooke of Nansemond
River
High School. The talented point guard will be
attending Virginia Tech after committing to Seth Greenberg and the Hokies last
month. The top 5 is rounded out by
Brian Johnson a 6’9” forward/center who recently transferred to Oak Hill
Academy from Bishop O’Connell and has subsequently committed to Rick Pitino
and the Louisville Cardinals, and at number 5 is another public school player
– Tyree Evans, a 6’3” swing player from George Wythe High School in
Richmond who is also being recruited as a football player and may attempt to
play both sports in college.
As usual the listing is dominated by non public school
players. Oak
Hill
Academy, Hargrave
Military
Academy
and
Fork
Union
Military
Academy
combined to place 16 players on the listing.
While Oak Hill only enrolls players with that have high school
eligibility remaining, both Fork Union and Hargrave have players that have
exhausted their high school eligibility but may be attempting to improve their
grades or visibility (or both) in order to obtain a Division One scholarship.
Many of the players that attend these schools are not native Virginians,
and some may argue should not be included. Since
they are playing basketball in the Old Dominion this winter – they are listed.
Other private schools such as Blue Ridge School, Faith Christian Academy,
The Potomac School (not to be confused the Potomac Senior High School), and
others account for an additional 29 players on the list.
Being able to discern which players are native to the state and which are
not, which are true seniors or not becomes very difficult so the listing
contains all senior or post grads that we are aware of that deserved to be in
the top 100.
The quality in this year’s listing appears strong, with 24 players already
made verbal commitments to Division 1 schools.
Another 2 players on the list have given verbal commitments to D1
football programs.
