It's time to present the annual

VirginiaPreps.com All-Northwest Region team!

Before delving into our roster, we
first should review the methodology that we follow when picking the team.
Though it forces us to make tough choices each year, as a staff we lean more
towards exclusivity than inclusion as our team includes only twelve offensive,
twelve defensive and four special teams players.

The offense will include two players
at the running back, wide receiver, tackle and guard positions with one player
named at quarterback, tight end and center as would be the case in a standard
offensive huddle.  Our one concession is to add an athlete position which
is used primarily as a "catch-all" where we include a player who, in our
opinion, has to be honored.

The very same rules apply to the
defensive side of the ball where we opt for a 4-4 alignment choosing four
defensive linemen, four linebackers, three defensive backs and one athlete.

In the specialists spots, we select
one punter, one kicker and two returners.

Unlike our prospect lists, the focus
of our all-region teams is to reward on-field play paying much more attention to
performance than college potential.  Additionally, we do not name players
to multiple positions which does allow us to honor as many as possible without
breaking our strict 12 players per side of the ball edict.

Lastly, for the all-region teams, we
consider play through the regional championship games.

As I said, many tough choices were
made.

Northwest Region First Team Offense

Quarterback and
Offensive Player of the Year -- Dominique Terrell, Osbourn

Though several players, especially
at the quarterback position, turned in outstanding performances this season,
there is simply no way to ignore the impact of Terrell on the gridiron as he was
a fairly easy choice for the player of the year honors.

In regional action, the Eagles
senior quarterback accounted for 3,315 yards and 47 touchdowns in leading his
team to a perfect 12-0 mark winning the Division Five championship.
Terrell completed 64 of 116 passes for 1,305 yards and 15 touchdowns with only
three interceptions while rushing for 2,010 yards and 32 touchdowns on 252
attempts.

Running back --
Nagee Jackson, Battlefield

Though his numbers may not have been
as eye-popping as some other backs named to all-region teams across the state,
the impact of Jackson in the Battlefield offense cannot be understated as he is
the top downhill runner for the Division Six regional champions.

On the year, the senior rushed for
989 yards and 21 touchdowns on 190 carries and nowhere was his impact more
evident than in the championship tilt when he carried 26 times for 264 yards and
four touchdowns.

Running back --
Jaylen Avent, Woodbridge

Digging their way out of their 0-3
start, the Woodbridge Vikings won six of their final seven contests to advance
to the Division Six postseason largely because they turned to their sophomore
running back in the ground game as Avent finished the season with 162 rushing
attempts for 963 yards (5.9 per carry) with eight touchdowns.

Wide Receiver --
Anthony Johnson, Mountain View

As the go-to guy in the Mountain
View aerial attack, Johnson lived up to preseason hype by collecting 31 passes
for 640 yards and seven touchdowns in helping the Wildcats advance to the
Division Five championship contest notching an 8-4 mark along the way.

Wide Receiver --
Lucky Whitehead, Osbourn

On the other side of the field in
the Division Five title game, the Eagles outstanding senior wideout accounted
for 1,171 yards of offense from the line of scrimmage snagging 33 passes for 698
yards, rushing 44 times for 437 yards and completing a 36-yard touchdown pass on
his only attempt as he finished regional play with 18 scores.

Tight End -- Eric
Frohnapfel, Colonial Forge

The top receiver on the Division Six
runners-up, the Eagles senior often found open space behind opposing defenses
grabbing 28 passes for 641 yards (22.8 per catch) with nine scores on the year.

Tackle -- Mark
Matthews, Osbourn

The top lineman on the Eagles
roster, Matthews was a two-way standout for the Division Five champions making
an impact on both sides of the ball as he earned first team honors in the Cedar
Run on each side of the line.

Tackle -- Sean
Greer, Franklin County

The Western Valley champions ran
through a number of running backs and used various quarterbacks at times
throughout the season yet swept through the district undefeated in notching an
8-2 record before topping Woodbridge in the first round then falling to Colonial
Forge in the semis.  A big reason for their success was the consistent work
done up front by this junior standout.

Guard -- Nick
Easter, Colonial Forge

In the Colonial Forge Wing-T attack,
Eastern, a potential DI commit, played a lead role as a pulling guard for a unit
that put up 35 or more points in all but one game this season.  The Eagles
are just as likely to power drive defenders backwards as they are to run
counters and get their linemen leading out in space.  Easter excels at
both.

Guard -- David
Risoldi, Battlefield

Heading up the Bobcats power-rushing
attack, Risoldi anchored an offensive line that paved the way for four running
backs to total over 350 yards on the ground including first team all-region
selection Nagee Jackson in helping the team capture their second straight
regional championship.

Center -- Freddie
Potter, Battlefield

As noted above with Risoldi, Potter
was a key player for the Bobcats in collecting a second consecutive regional
crown leading the way for their power-rushing attack which spends most of their
time pounding the rock between the tackles.

Athlete --
Dominique Miller, Hylton

Probably the only serious threat to
Terrell for offensive player of the year honors, Miller is a perfect fit for our
athlete position as it would be a figurative crime to not have him on the first
team all-region roster.

In leading the Bulldogs to a perfect
regular season and 10-1 mark on the year, Miller stepped behind center for the
first time his senior season and put together a remarkable year completing 133
of 278 passes for 2,040 yards and 23 touchdowns adding another 634 yards and
nine scores rushing.

Northwest Region First Team Defense

Defensive Line --
 Sidney Blue,
Massaponax

A four-year started for the
Panthers, Blue has been the standout player in the trenches for a program which
has compiled a 32-14 mark during his high school career.

Defensive Line --
 Zavier
Stringfellow, Battlefield

An all-state first team selection
last season, Stringfellow turned in another fine performance this year as the
in-the-trenches leader for the regional champion Bobcats who limited opponents
to 11.7 points per game in regional action.

Defensive Line --
 Dimitri
Mack, Osbourn

The Cedar Run district player of the
year has been an impact player for an Osbourn program who played in two straight
regional championship contests winning this year's 48-7 with the senior playing
a major role.

Defensive Line --
 Parrish
Kelley, Hylton

A quick and destructive force off
the edge for the Bulldogs, Kelley played an integral role in the team's success
as Hylton recorded a perfect regular season and allowed only 166 points in
eleven district games.

Linebacker -- Kevin Wiley, Loudoun
Valley

A run-stuffing, fill-the-window,
hard-hitting linebacker, Wiley was a two-way first team all-district player for
the Vikings this season a major player in the program's turnaround from 1-9 in
2008 to their 8-4 mark this year.

Linebacker and Defensive Player of the Year-- Trey Preston, Franklin
County

The Eagles middle backer notched 140
tackles this season earning him the Western Valley district player of the year
honors for the second year in a row and the senior standout was also selected
the Region defensive player of the year by the area coaches.

Linebacker -- Chris Wendle,
Battlefield

Leading a strong linebacking corps
for the regional champion Bobcats, Wendle earned his spot on the team by helping
this unit stuff every unit that they faced this season as only one offense
scored higher than their season average against the regional champs.

Linebacker -- Christian Harris,
Hylton

Through their first nine games this
season, only one team had scored more than two touchdowns against the Bulldogs
as they recorded a perfect 10-0 season before being bounced by Battlefield in
the postseason.  From his inside linebacker position, Harris was a
playmaker affecting every offense that took the field against the Bulldogs.

Defensive Back -- Iric Harris,
Hylton

Returning from a knee injury that
cost him his junior season, Harris showed no ill effects from the setback and
put together one of the finest seasons in the state leading the Bulldogs defense
in interceptions and standing out as perhaps the top cover corner in the region.

Defensive Back -- De'Vonte Piggott,
Gar-Field

A first team All-Cardinal district
selection on both sides of the ball, Piggott stands out as one of the top
athletes in the region and a major player for an Indians team who advanced to
the postseason for the first time in three years.

Defensive Back -- Tim Scott,
Colonial Forge

The Commonwealth District defensive
player of the year, Scott proved to be one of the toughest matchups in the
region for wideouts as his speed and willingness to play physical football
proved to be a challenge for anyone lined up against the future North Carolina
Tar Heel.

Athlete -- Daquan Stewart, Mountain
View

In qualifying for the postseason for
the first time in school history, the Mountain View Wildcats got supreme effort
and big-game plays from safety Daquan Stewart as box stories of the 'Cats season
could not be written without mention of his crucial interceptions, forced
fumbles or big plays in key moments.

Northwest Region First Team Specialists

Kicker -- Chris Boteler, Osbourn

The regional champion Eagles kept
Boteler warm this season scoring 535 points on the year with the junior
connecting on seven field goals and 61 extra points on the season and, more
impressively, averaged four touchbacks per contests putting opposing
offenses in the hole early in drives.

Punter -- Remington Hinshaw,
Patrick Henry

A standout goalie in soccer, Hinshaw
transitions well to the football field where he serves as the Patriots kicking
specialist earning both ours and the coaches nod as the first team all-region
punter.

Returner -- Bobo Beathard,
Battlefield

The Bobcats standout is so good and
so versatile that he could have earned first team honors at wideout or defensive
back as well if we named players to multiple positions.  There may not have
been a more important player on the roster for the regional champions this
season.

Returner -- Shane Preston, Franklin
County

The Western Valley offensive player
of the year, Preston was nearly as versatile as Beathard and probably more
explosive as he scored 15 touchdowns on the season as a wide receiver and made a
huge impact in the return game posting a 28.3 yard average on kickoffs.

Division Six Coach -- Mark Cox,
Battlefield

Though the Bobcats suffered more
than one loss in the regular season for the first time since 2006, their only
blemishes came in tight contests against undefeated regular season programs in
Hylton and Osbourn.  The 'Cats avenged the loss to the Bulldogs with a
48-14 thrashing in the postseason and outscored opponents 107-41 in their run to
their second straight regional title.

Division Five Coach -- Steve
Schultze, Osbourn

Through their perfect run to the
regional championship, the Eagles outscored opponents 535-190, an average of
44.5 to 15.8 per contest as no defense limited the Eagles to less than 24 points
and no opposing offense totaled more than 32 against them (and that was in a
24-point loss!).
