Now that the teams across the state have concluded regional play, it's
time for us to name our all-region teams and today we take a look at
the Northern Region.
One thing to note about our all-region selections is that, in an
attempt to keep our squads a bit more exclusive (and, in theory,
prestigious), we limit our rosters to just eleven players on each side
of the ball with one 'athlete' selection which, in essence, amounts to
a wildcard selection. It forces us to make a number of tough
choices which means that some very deserving players fail to get
recognized but, as a staff, we believe that makes the selections that
we do make all that much more unique and special.
In an effort to increase the number of players who we recognize, we
hold ourselves to not naming any players on both sides of the ball or
naming one player to multiple positions.
Lastly, please note that in considering players for the all-region
squad, we only take into consideration games played through the
regional title contests.
Without further ado...

Region Offense
Quarterback, Caleb
Henderson, Soph, West Potomac
It
what was one of the toughest calls to make for the first team, we opt
for the superior statistics over the winning-through-intangibles guy as
Henderson completed 148 of 283 passes for 2,403 yards and 27 touchdowns
versus only seven interceptions with another 528 yards and four scores
rushing to edge out Matt Pisarcik of Westfield. Perhaps the
clinching
moment for the sophomore was his performance against the Westfield
defense as he threw for 348 yards and two touchdowns in the Wolverines
42-34 loss in the regional semifinals.
Running back and
Offensive Player of the Year, Kendell Anderson, Sr, Westfield
The
Bulldogs pick was a no-brainer at the running back spot and a fairly
clear pick as the Offensive Player of the Year after totaling 1,770
yards
and 28 touchdowns on 249 carries this season in leading his team to
the Concorde District championship and an appearance in the regional
title contest. He more than cemented his spot his spot by
rushing
for over 180 yards in four games this season including a season-high
312-yards against West Potomac in their regular season meeting.
Running back, Manny
Smith, Sr, Centreville
The
Wildcats back was the engine that made the regional champions offense
go as he rushed for 1,663 yards and scored 20 touchdowns on 310
carries.
In his team's first nine games this season, Smith rushed for
over
100 yards including two 200-yard efforts and scored three times against
Lake Braddock in the region semis and twice in the regional finals
against Westfield.
Wide receiver, Tanner
Quigley, Sr, Lake Braddock
The
brother of Bruins quarterback Tyler, the senior was the go-to guy for
the Lake Braddock offense collecting 71 passes for 1,111 yards and 13
touchdowns. Perhaps his finest moment in the season came in
the
opening round of the playoffs when he hauled in ten passes for 188
yards and four touchdowns in his team's victory over the Oakton Cougars
helping the Bruins advance to the regional semifinals.
Wide receiver, Quentin
Basil, Sr, Westfield
Though the Bulldogs didn't throw the
style="font-weight: bold;">ball
as often as other programs, they are as effective as anyone when they
look to their big senior down the field as Basil averaged 19.7 yards
per
catch by hauling in 49 receptions for 968 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Highlighting his season was his back-to-back performances in
the
postseason as he hauled in a combined 14 passes for 316 yards and three
touchdowns between the Bulldogs regional semifinal contest with West
Potomac and their regional title game against Centreville.
Tight end, Tyrone
Mackall, Sr, Edison
The
top pass-catcher for Edison, Mackall earns first team honors by virtue
of his performance this season which included 50 receptions for 927
yards and 15 touchdowns. His virtuoso performance came
against
West Springfield in the opening game of the season when he snagged nine
passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. In half of his
team's
games this season, Mackall totaled over 80 yards receiving scoring
touchdowns in all but two contests.
Tackle, Cody Smith, Sr,
South County
In
helping lead his team to a 10-3 record and a regional championship in
Division Five, Smith opened holes for a running game that saw three
ball carries total over 400 yards on the groundcombined with a passing
game that totaled over 1,300 yards. During their ten-game
winning
streak, the Stallions have put up 24 or more points in seven of the
contests including a five-game streak heading into their state
semifinal contest.
Tackle, Sean Douglass,
Sr, Westfield
Anchoring
a strong offensive line who paved the way for region player of the year
Kendell Anderson, Douglass and company headed up a group that scored 21
or more points in all but one game this season while averaging over 36
points per game. In one particularly impressive four-game
stretch
this season from late-September through late-October, the Bulldogs
scored 154 points scoring 48, 40, 31 and 35 points in succession.
Guard, Jack Howerton, Jr,
Langley
A
unanimous all-district selection in the Liberty, the Saxons' junior is
the key blocker in the team's offensive attack which featured
1,000-yard runner Phillip Mun and over 1,000-yards passing combined
from Nick Casso and Austin Vasiliadis. The 6-foot-2,
310-pounder
is a road-grading lineman who will once again anchor the Langley
offensive line next season before moving on to play college football.
Guard, Andrew Sargeant,
Sr, Westfield
Joining
Douglass as a guy who opened lanes for the regional player of the year,
Sargeant is a key blocker in the Bulldogs' power game which is the
first thing that they look to establish in a ball game. The
6-foot-1, 205-pounder doesn't have traditional offensive lineman size
but more than makes up for that with his technique and drive.
Through the regional finals, only Centreville had outscored
Westfield in the Northern Region.
Center, Tommy Friederich,
Sr, West Potomac
A
nearly-unanimous selection by the coaches at center, the senior earns
our pick as well as the Wolverines offense puts a lot of stress on the
center not only from a blocking perspective but also from a snapping
one as the Wolverines spend a lot of time in shotgun formations.
In their twelve games this season, West Potomac scored over
21 in
ten of them and over 31 in nine of those ten.
Athlete, M.J. Stewart,
Soph, Yorktown
There's
no way simply no way to keep the Patriots outstanding running back off
this roster as he rushed for 1,596 yards and 31 touchdowns for the
undefeated National District champions on 179 carries. In
addition, he hauled in 13 passes for 251 yards proving to be an
effective receiver when targeted. He topped the century mark
in
seven games on the season and posted back-to-back incredible
performances in the middle of the season by rushing for 288 yards and
five scores against Stuart then following that up with 228 yards and
three touchdowns against Edison.

Region Defense
Defensive
Lineman and Defensive Player of the Year, Ken Ekanem, Sr, Centreville
A
unanimous selection to the All-Concorde District coaches' team and the
conference's Defensive Player of the Year, the Wildcats' senior end was
the clear choice bot for this team and for the player of the year
honors as he helped lead his team to a 12-1 record in the Northern
Region as they captured the Division Six championship. One
the
season, the Wildcats defense proved to be one of the toughest in the
region holding their opponents to 14 or fewer points in every regular
season contest.
Defensive Lineman,
Jonathan Allen, Jr, Stone Bridge
An
all-state selection last season as a sophomore, the Bulldogs alpha male
defender in the trenches was again an impact player this season leading
a defense that allowed only 152 points in twelve games this season
(12.6 per contest). In the six games that Stone Bridge played
from the beginning of October through the regional semifinals, the
defense limited opponents to one touchdown or less in five games.
Defensive Lineman, Andre
Kendall, Sr, Robinson
A
unanimous selection to the All-Concorde District coaches' team, the
6-foot-2, 235-pounder has developed a reputation as a dominating force
in the trenches for the Rams. In eleven games this season,
the
Rams held opponents to 17 or fewer points including limiting Stone
Bridge to just a field goal in their season-opening battle, holding
Lake Braddock to just a touchdown in a 24-7 victory and shutting down
Chantilly in a 20-3 win.
Defensive Lineman,
Kelechi Adama, Sr, Hayfield
The
6-foot-0, 240-pounder was a unanimous selection to the All-National
District team this season along the defensive line. The Hawks
big
man established himself as a premier stopper in the trenches helping
the team pitch two shutouts and limit three other offenses to 12 points
or less as Hayfield notched an 8-3 record on the season.
Linebacker, Devin
Vandyke, Sr, South County
The Stallions standout has spearheaded a defense that allowed more than
22 points in only one game this season while pitching two shutouts and
holding five other opponents to single digit scoring in making their
run to the Division Five championship game. The 6-foot-2,
210-pounder was a unanimous pick as an All-Patriot district 'backer
where he also earned the Defensive Player of the Year award.
Linebacker, Matt
Vlissides, Sr, Centreville
A unanimous selection to the All-Concorde District team at linebacker,
the 6-foot-0, 210-pounder was an easy nod for our all-region team as he
helped the Wildcats won the regional championship by holding all but
one of their opponents to 19 or fewer points in accumulating a 12-1
mark within the Northern Region.
Linebacker, Mark Gibson,
Sr, Westfield
One of the top playmakers on the defensive side of the ball in the
Northern Region, the 5-foot-10, 180-pounder helped his team capture the
Concorde District title as the Bulldogs completed a perfect regular
season and advanced to the Division Six regional championship game by
holding eleven of their thirteen opponents to 14 points or less over
the course of the season.
Linebacker, Austin
Browne, Sr, Yorktown
The 6-foot-0, 240-pound linebacker was the co-Defensive Player of the
Year in the National District along with Hayfield defensive lineman
Kelechi Adama as he helped the Patriots record a perfect regular season
advancing to the Division Five regional championship contest as they
pitched three shutouts and held nine of their thirteen opponents to 15
or fewer points through the course of the season.
Defensive Back, Connor
Coward, Sr, Centreville
The Northern Region Division Six champions
were one of the top units in the area losing only one game in the
region all season (in overtime) and their 6-foot-2, 200-pound defensive
back played a major role in their success providing shutdown coverage
out wide for the Wildcats who held all but one of their opponents to
less than 20 points.
style="font-weight: bold;">
Defensive Back, Andrew Rector, Sr, South County
A unanimous pick for the all-Patriot team, the 5-foot-10,
185-pounder ranked among the top impact players in the state from the
defensive side of the ball as he helped the Stallions capture the
regional championship by scoring four defensive touchdowns on the year
including two against Lee and a 93-yard fumble recovery score against
Robinson that sent that contest into overtime where the Stallions won
by a field goal.
Defensive Back, Mike Tompkins, Sr, Stone Bridge
A unanimous selection to the all-Liberty District squad,
the 6-foot-1, 200-pound defensive back ended his high school career by
helping the Bulldogs notch a 10-2 record by limiting nine of their
twelve opponents to less than 21 points pitching three shutouts and
holding three other offenses to just one score.
Athlete, Hayden Knudson, Sr, Hayfield
A do-it-all athlete for the Hawks, the
6-foot-1, 185-pounder was a unanimous pick to the all-National District
team as a defensive back (and as a wideout) as he played key roles on
both sides of the ball for a Hawks team who notched an 8-3 record on
the season holding over half of their opponents to 21 or fewer points.

Region Specialists
Kicker,
Nick Dorka, Jr, Madison
The unanimous pick for the place kicker spot on the all-Liberty
district team, the 5-foot-11, 150-pounder connected on 22 extra points
and 8 field goals this season to score 46 points. At his
best, the junior led the Warhawks to a 16-13 victory over South Lakes
by kicking the game-tying and game-winning field goals in the fourth
quarter helping his team notch a 7-4 record on the season.
Punter, Mark Schebler,
Sr, Chantilly
The senior was the unanimous pick as the Concorde District punter as
the 6-foot-2, 165-pound boomed punts throughout the course of the
season helping the Chargers notch a 6-5 record this season.
Punting the ball 34 times over the course of the season, the
Changers senior averaged 38.6 yards per attempt.
Returner, Sadiq Oyedele,
Jr, Mount Vernon
With
three returns for touchdowns on the season, the National District
unanimous pick for returner earns a spot on our team as well. The
5-foot-7, 170-pounder proved to be one of the more dynamic players in
the region this season scoring eleven touchdowns on the year including
four against Washington-Lee in his team's 28-6 victory.
style="font-weight: bold;">
Returner, Brandon Johnson, Sr, West Potomac
The West Potomac return man was a key player in the Wolverines' 8-4
season earning the coaches pick at the return spot on the all-Patriot
District team. On the season, the 5-foot-10, 170-pounder
scored 15 touchdowns and accounted for 1,166 yards of offense.

style="font-weight: bold;">VirginiaPreps.com All-Northern
Region Coaches
Division
Five Coach of the Year, Gerry Pannoni, South County
Named the head coach of the Stallions in early July, the
former Centreville lead man and 30-year coaching veteran had little
time to get to know his players which may have contributed to their 0-3
start losing to Hayfield, Oakton and West Potomac out of the gate but
the coach and the team rebounded to win their next ten ball games to
capture the regional crown to advance to the state playoffs.
Division Six Coach of the
Year, Chris Haddock, Centreville
Taking over a team coming off a 3-7 mark in 2009, Haddock's team
improved six games in the win column in his first year leading the
program notching a 9-3 mark last year but the Wildcats took another big
leap forward this season losing only one game during the regular season
when they lost a 13-10 overtime contest to Westfield which they avenged
in the regional title game capturing the crown with a 27-24 victory
before moving into the state playoffs.
