VirginiaPreps.com 4A South All-Region Team
Before
we announce the 2013 VirginiaPreps.com 4A South team, let's take a

quick moment to review the standards that we've put into place around
the all-region and all-state team that we name each season.
First,
we limit ourselves to just twelve players on each side of the ball with
four specialists and one coach of the year. We also will not
name
co-players of the year on either side of the ball forcing us to make
very difficult decisions. Last but not least, because we
limit
the team to just 26 players overall, we want to honor as many as
possible, therefore we will not name a player at more than one position.
On
the defensive side of the ball, we name four defensive linemen, four
linebackers, three defensive backs and one 'wildcard' position that we
generically name 'athlete'.
Offensively, we name a quarterback,
two running backs, three wide receivers, four offensive linemen and one
'wildcard' position that we generically name 'athlete'.
Naming
three wide receivers is a notable change from past seasons when we
named two wide outs and one tight end, but the trend for spread
offenses has led us to believe that it is the right time to make that
move. However, when applicable, we will name a tight end as
thethird wide receiver, so that position is a bit of a flex
spot.
As always, we had several tough calls to make but we feel that the
collaborative nature of our staff makes for a quality squad.

hspace="5" vspace="5">Prior to this season, the
Dinwiddie Generals had advanced to six consecutive postseasons
including a run to the state title game in 2008 clearly establishing
themselves as a power player in the state of Virginia. On
paper, the 2013 squad looked to be one of the best in school history,
if not the best, and they opened the year as the #3-ranked program in
Class 4A.
Running back Sadarius Williams was a key component of the team's
expected success and he delivered in a big way on the field rushing for
2,208 yards and 25 touchdowns on 224 carries with an additional 318
yards and four scores coming on 24 receptions. The senior was
the linchpin for a Generals offense that was the highest scoring unit
in the state averaging 47.9 points per contest.

hspace="5" vspace="5">As previously noted, the
Dinwiddie offense ranked as the overall #1 scoring unit in the state,
but don't make the mistake of thinking that the Generals were just a
high-scoring machine this season as they were shutting opponents down
with regularity as well. On the year, the defense allowed
only 8.5 points per game, the stingiest total in the state among Class
4A programs.
The group pitched four shutouts, limited nine opponents to single digit
scores and saw only one team on their schedule (Matoaca) score more
than two touchdowns against them. More impressively, they
shut out their first three playoff opponents (Jamestown, Norcom and
Lake Taylor) before allowing only 14 apiece to both Heritage and
Sherando at the state level. Heading up the unit was senior
defensive back Rashaad Goodwyn who totaled 121 tackles, 76 solo, 15
tackles for loss, eight pass break ups, three quarterback hurries,
three forced fumbles, two interceptions, two defensive scores, one sack
and one fumble recovery.

hspace="5" vspace="5">From 2001-2005, the Dinwiddie
Generals won only five football games after advancing to the state
championship game in 2000 with a 12-2 mark. Enter head coach
Billy Mills who took over the program in 2006. He opened his
reign at the school with a 3-7 record and they've not looked back since
notching winning seasons in each of the last seven years including a
run to the title game in 2008.
In notching a perfect 15-0 season, the Generals proved to be the class
of the 4A schools topping everyone that they faced by at least three
touchdowns as their closest contest came in a 21-0 win over Thomas
Dale. On the year, six of their fifteen wins came over teams
with winning records including victories over Thomas Dale, Meadowbrook,
Norcom, Lake Taylor, Heritage and Sherando. Perhaps most
impressively, the Generals were the top-scoring team in the state this
season, regardless of class, and their defense ranked #4 in the state
overall and tops in class 4A.
