5. I also enjoy working various basketball camps throughout the summer. I have worked for Bruce Pearl and the University of Tennessee staff for the past two years and worked for Coach George Pitts at King College in Bristol, Tennessee this past year.
How and why I got into coaching: First of all I have a passion for the game of basketball and I have a passion for teaching. Not only do I want my players to have an understanding of the game but also to be the best person they can be. I do not tolerate insubordination, disrespect, or any behavior detrimental to the success of our team. I have always wanted to be a head varsity boys basketball coach and was surfing on the internet one day when I noticed that there was an opening here at Northwood. I applied, interviewed and got the job. The first couple of years were pretty rough ( a 3-43 record) but we are trying to get things turned around (Northwood's best season in ten years last year at 12-12) and hopefully we can be as successful or better this year.
Preview For the Coming Season
This year's team will be a senior laden team, something I have not experienced as a head coach. We are returning three starters but lose two Hogoheegee All-District Players. The returning starters, plus our other seniors, have stuck by this team through the good and the really bad times which makes me proud to be their coach. The three returning starters are Zach Roberts, Zach Delp, and Chris Robinson who will also serve as team captains. These young men have worked year-round since they were freshmen my first year at Northwood and their hard work has certainly paid off. I believe leadership will be one of our strengths this year. Also we are a more confident team than in the past because of the success we had last year. While some teams may not look at a 12-12 season as successful it was a huge success here at Northwood. Our guys have realized that their hard work and dedication have paid off and they believe in themselves and their teammates which will help us this season. As far as weaknesses go, my biggest concern is rebounding. We lost our top rebounder last year (Jon Trueblood at 9 rebounds a game to go along with 14 ppg) so I am looking to see someone step up in that category. 6'5 Steven Jordan may fill that void. Steven is a senior who didn't play last year but played j.v. the year before and has a lot of potential. He has worked hard all summer and is leading as of now in seeing minutes in the paint. Our other post players are playing football so I haven't seen them since this summer but I am confident they will give their best in competing for playing time. We also have a several sophomores that may see varsity time; one of those players is Trevor Hagen. Trevor is a very slim but 6'5 ½ post player that can play facing the basket or with his back to the basket.
This season will start with some definite uncertainty. I believe that George Wythe will be the class of the Hogoheegee district this year and my goal is for our team to be competitive in each game and to be peaking come district and regional time. We are a D1 school which means we are automatically in the regions but we are not satisfied with that. We want to make history this year. One thing I do believe, we may not be the most talented team each night, but I do not believe that anyone will work harder than this team. They have worked hard to reach this point. They have bought into our system and I am excited to see where these seniors take us this year.
