Big Apple, here she comes. Former Monacan standout Megan Walker, who led the Lady Chiefs to three consecutive VHSL Class 4 State Championships, was selected ninth overall in the 2020 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty on Friday night.
"I'm so ecstatic to be in this position I'm in now," Walker said. "I always wanted to be in the WNBA as a kid, and now I'm living my dream."
Walker, who went on to star in college at the University of Connecticut, was ranked the No. 1 recruit nationally in the Class of 2017 by ESPN. She was the Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year as a senior at Monacan, averaging 25.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game in leading them to a perfect 30-0 overall record. She finished her career there with 2062 points.
While at UCONN, Walker was an Associated Press First Team All-American, averaging 19.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game as a junior in 2019-20.
With the New York Liberty, Walker will get to play alongside former Oregon Ducks star Sabrina Ionescu, the Naismith Player of the Year for 2020 and NCAA's all-time leader in career triple-double who was selected first overall in the draft.
