Mike Davis
Three Point Line Sports: One of Richmond's Best Basketball Trainers
Mike Davis
favorite shot as a player was the long three pointer.
So is there any doubt to why he named his company Three Point Line
Sports???
A former
player at Virginia Tech, Mike has love of basketball.Seldom will you find a former player who is such a student of the game.
If you hang out with Mike you will see his entire life is basketball.Try having a conversation with him and his phone will ring every minute
or so with a player asking advice, a team wanting to play in one of his
tournaments or any other assortment of basketball related issues. The Man loves Basketball and the players he trains.
Recently he
started Three Point Line Sports.His
organization offers training in basketball, hosts fine run tournaments and
fields presently two quality AAU Girls basketball teams.Mike is on point for most everything at Three Point Line Sports.
He organizes the events; is the head coach of the 13 U team and or
assistant coach on the 14 U's.
We caught of
with Coach Davis and asked him to hold the calls during our interview. (He
reluctantly agreed)
You have
played the game, trained players and coached at the AAU and Professional
Level, what level do you enjoy most?
MD: What I
enjoy most is seeing a player at any level aspire to move to the next level
and then seeing them make changes in their game with hard work to get to the
next level.
How do you
compare the Richmond
area girl's basketball to the Hampton Roads?
MD: The sheer
number of athletes in Hampton Roads area causes the
Richmond
players to often be overlooked. The
talent in
Richmond
is very good. I think this
year's rising Jr class is one of the most talented around.
Who in
basketball do you try and pattern your approach after?
MD: Not one
person. I try and take some of the
good things from others and incorporate them into what I teach.
It doesn't matter who it is, if I see something good then we use it.
Going into
this High School Basketball Season who do you think will be surprise team?
MD:
Meadowbrook. With Porsha Walton
coming in that will give a big boost. No
one can stay in front of her; she is a superb point guard.
You had a real
good 14U team at Three Point Line
Sports, which players on this team do you see having a breakout season next
year in High School play?
MD: Of course
Porsha Walton, Mariah Douglas with
Hanover, Tracy Ackers with Colonial Heights,
Hopie Thompson and Eleanor Clemente at Midlothian,
Clarke Brown at St Gertrude and Taylor Huber at Patrick Henry.
When you train
a player how do you motivate them to keep pushing themselves?
MD: With any
player it starts with what is in their heart. Then
we try to formulate a vision of what they can become.
This allows them to focus on goals needed to accomplish their vision.
Then we try to keep them focused on doing the things that are needed to
accomplish their goals and make their vision a reality.
At what age
did the desire to be a coach hit you?
MD:
At
age 21.
What were
you doing at the time?
MD: Playing
basketball at VA Tech. While
I loved playing I knew then I really wanted to be a coach.
What do you
like better training players or coaching?
You can't say both equally!
MD: I like
training some players and coaching others.
There are some players that work so hard you really enjoy training them
and others that are so coachable that you really enjoy being their coach.
So it all depends on the player I have as to what I like the best.
What is
your long range plan for Three Point Line Sports?
MD: I want to
continue doing what I have always been doing:
Combining great training, commitment to the players success, love for
them as a person, and interject the
gospel and sincerity of heart into all that we do with each player.
This has worked well for me and continues to be our plan.
