Corner", a unique, new feature to VirginiaPreps.com's
Single A boy's basketball coverage this season.
So far we have introduced our readers to a number of coaches from around the
state, and today we have another installment. Featured today is Brandon
Garrett, the Boy's Varsity Basketball Coach at Nelson County. Below
Coach Garrett provides in-depth information on his background, family and
basketball program. We have also provided links to the past "Coaches
Corner" installments. Enjoy!
From
Nelson County Coach Brandon Garrett:
I graduated from Parry McCluer High School in 1995. While there I played for who I consider one of the best coaches in Virginia, Nelson Fox. My junior year was very successful for us. After winning Parry McCluer's first Region C championship in a number of years we lost in the state championship game to
William Monroe. My senior year we repeated as Region C champions I was an all district and all region player but we again lost to eventual champion William Monroe in the state.
Coming from such a small school I did not get much exposure or draw much interest from larger schools. In July after my senior year I went up to
Fork Union Military Academy were I met coach Fletcher Arritt for the first time. Coach Arritt was full for the incoming year; I knew that going in but decided to go anyway for the workout. He said if any decided not to come I would have that spot but it didn't work out that way. He also made some contacts for me. I then had to choose to go to a Division III school or prep in Connecticut or South Carolina.
I chose to go to Camden Military Academy
in South Carolina where I played for Eric Boland. I was finally getting some looks for bigger school and had narrowed my decision down to 2 or 3 schools when I badly broke my hand. After bouncing from school to school for a few years I put college on the back burner and went to work. I eventually went back and played at Ferrum College where I graduated from.
This is only my third year as a teacher, second here at Nelson County but I have been coaching for a while. I have had stops at
Rockbridge County, Parry McCluer, and Southern Virginia University before I arrived here.
I just turned 30 years old. My wife's name is Misty and we have four children. Kelsey, Bech, Caden, and Lincoln. What little spare time I have I enjoy spending with my kids. I love watching college sports and I am a diehard Michigan fan.
I, along with my assistants, have worked very hard in the short time here to turn Nelson County into a contender. We return about half of our team this year. We attended many camps this summer in preparation for the upcoming season. The
Dogwood District might be the toughest district top to bottom in the state as far as basketball goes. Appomattox and Dan River will make it only stronger. On any given night I feel anone can beat anyone.
Our team will be rather small but I like our quickness on the perimeter. Hopefully all of the work in the off-season will pay off
