The annual Best of the 757 Baseball combine was held at Virginia Wesleyan College with participants from all across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Christopher Newport assistant baseball coach Andy Wissinger was one of several college coaches who attended the camp and he said the Best of the 757 Baseball Combine was a great benefit because he is able to see several different position players perform against other talent. He identified some of the qualities he looks for in a baseball prospect.
"First of all, we look for goods athletes," Wissinger said. "We want to have good athletes on our team and guys that can play the game and know the game. We want guys with good baseball instincts; know what they are doing on the field, where the ball is suppose to be thrown. Also good actions, good footwork and hands to make sure they get to the balls they are suppose to get to."

King's Fork Tristen Deguzman was a triple threat and he was selected the overall Top Performer for his hitting, pitching and base running. In the two game showcase Guzman had a deep triple to center for an RBI in the first game and he had two singles and he reached base on 5 of his 6 opportunities. He also had five stolen bases and a run scored. Deguzman took the extra base on every opportunity and took advantage of a wild pitch to score a run.
Also from Kings Fork was outfielder/pitcher Ricky McCleod who used his strong arm to throw out a baserunner at third and who made a perfect one hop throw to nail a baserunner at home. McCleod threw two scoreless innings while collecting two strikeouts.
Salem's Zachary Baber was the top overall hitter with multiple hits and an RBI in both showcase games. The junior showed power to all fields in the individual drills on the first day of the camp then followed that performance by going 3 of 7 from the plate with two extra base hits and four RBI.

Marvin Pryor, a senior from Menchville High School, was selected the top outfielder for his speed in the outfield and for swinging the bat with authority. He went 2 of 4 from the plate and reached base three times. Pryor also showed some power taking a fast base just inside the left center fence.
Nicholas Lees from Nansemond River was clearly the top infielder for his skillset and he was the best fielder at both second base and shortstop. He seemed to catch everything and turned potential singles into ground ball outs. He was very fluid while positioning his body for the grounder and he had a strong arm from the back of the infield. Although he didn't get a hit in the showcase games, he did drive in two runs with an infield grounder and sacrifice fly.
Maggie Walkers Governor's School Matthew Pinson made the drive from Richmond and he took home the top pitcher award. In two innings, Pinson allowed only one hit while striking out three batters. He also had an excellent pickoff move to first base.
Cox senior Garrett Hunter was chosen the top catcher primarily for his work during the individual drills on the first day which included fielding bunts and throwing to each base. Hunter was praised for his quickness getting out of his stance into throwing position. Landstown catcher Dylan Schumacher went 1 for 3 from the plate in the first showcase game and he threw out a baserunner trying to steal second. Schumacher also handled the catching drills without too much trouble.
Hickory outfielder Christian Simms showed a strong arm from the outfield and he was also very solid on the mound. He went 2 of 5 from the plate collecting a hit in each of the showcase games. Kempsville senior outfielder Bradley Addison displayed good speed on the basepaths and he was able to time his jump for two stolen bases. Western Branch second baseman John Patto had an RBI double and also reached base three other times on walks.
