District MVP: Tallwood's Kelly
Beidler - The
senior showed, in a league where there's an abundant
lacking
of big men, that he can defend three positions (3, 4 and 5) and sometimes even
the other two positions. Beidler
isn't the tallest, measuring in at about 6-foot-5 or 6-foot-6.
Beidler is certainly a good scorer, but doesn't rank as the
district's most lethal one as he was averaging 15.4PPG (3rd in the
league) heading into the Eastern Region Tournament.
He isn't even the most talented player; picking Mount St. Mary's for
his college destination while other big men like Duke Crews (Tennessee), Jamel
McLean (Tulsa) and Mike Scott (Temple) were making plans for bigger name
schools. What is he then?
The region's most improved player in my opinion and does more of the
intangible things for his team. "They
showed me they wanted me," said Beidler back in mid-January as to why he chose
Mount St. Mary's. To them, he
says, "I wasn't just a backup." His
clutch play down the stretch in games has been the difference if you ask me,
making him as valuable as they come. Go
ask his Head Coach, who uses the word "unselfish" to describe Beidler, and
he'll probably tell you likewise. Call
him agile, mobile or whatever you want – I'll call him the proven leader in
this pack.

District Offensive Player of the Year: Green
Run's B.J. Jenkins - Worthy
of winning Beach District
MVP,
Jenkins was by far and away the top player in the district opponents looked to
take away. And few were successful.
Jenkins finished the regular season by recording back-to-back
quadruple-doubles against Cox and Bayside, being the only one to our knowledge
in the entire state to do so. The
Stallions senior was the city's lone player to score in double-figures in
every game he played, plus connected on a team-high 44 three-pointers.
In addition, he had a triple-double vs. Kempsville, led the league in
points, assists and steals, and was one of the area's most proficient
shooters. The three-time All-Beach 1st
Team pick never shied away from contact, perhaps making him the region's best
rebounder from the point guard position, too.
Finally, from a team perspective,
none
mean more to theirs than Jenkins.
He's been the biggest reason why Green Run, practically dead in
basketball prior to his arrival, has reached the regional tournament each of the
last three years and the Stallions posted the second best record in Virginia
Beach this season.

District Defensive Player of the Year: Tallwood's
A.J. Boggs - As
much as
his
teammate Beidler, reserve sophomore guard Arthur 'A.J.' Boggs is a major
reason why the Lions rank 1st overall in points per game allowed in
the entire region consisting of 38 other schools.
Coach Matt Myint has noted the defensive intensity of Boggs all season
long and it's really showing now with Tallwood set to take the floor in the
opening round of the state playoffs on Saturday.
Boggs hasn't scored more than four points in a single game all year,
but during the course of the season has shut down the likes of perimeter threats
Damien Butler (Bayside), Antoine Perry (B.T. Washington), Ryan Tatem (Granby)
and Kamil Kelly (Green Run) among others. Nicknamed
'Juice,' Boggs didn't let a crucial missed free-throw at the end of the
game in a loss to Maury back in December deject him.
Boggs came back and played superb defense down the stretch vs. the
Commodores in a thrilling come-from-behind region playoff win that may turn out
to be the defining game of Tallwood's playoff run.
He's the premier defensive substitution in Hampton Roads and it was
only fitting that it was his successful free-throw, on the second try, that won
them the region title over Booker T. Washington.

the Year: Ocean Lakes' Mike Head

(right)
normal"> - In
the six
seasons
leading up to 2005-06, the Ocean Lakes Dolphins went 18-98.
In Head's first year as the Head Coach, the results were better than
anyone could've ever imagined. Ocean
Lakes went from winning just two games last season to posting an 18-9 overall
record – equaling those six terrible years in one season's time.
Remarkable job by Head when you consider his Dolphins didn't have a
defined go-to-guy on the offensive end, yet knocked off Green Run and Landstown
en route to the school's first ever Beach District Tournament title.
Then in the school's first ever region tournament trip, they defeated
Denbigh for their first ever region playoff win.
Over at Tallwood, they've gone an extremely impressive 26-2 overall and
had a perfect regular season record in district play.
Also another remarkable feat in a league that was widely considered the
hardest to project before the season began.
Myint's Lions enter the state playoffs with maybe Virginia's best
defense at the AAA level. Through 28
games, Tallwood's allowing an average of 40.8PPG – the lowest amount in the
entire Eastern Region. Ocean Lakes
also did it with defense, limiting 12 of the 27 teams they faced to 46 points or
below. Both of these quality coaches
are up for the VirginiaPreps.com Eastern Region Coach of the Year award as well.

District Newcomer of the Year: Tallwood's
Mike Holloman - A
transfer from Landstown, Holloman missed the first eight games of the regular
season with an injury. When he
returned to the parquet on January 3rd in his team's 53-37 win at
Cox, Holloman scored eight points and his impact from there on out has been so
instrumental to the point that Tallwood would be done playing without him.
He's scored precisely 200 points in twenty games, an exact average of
10PPG. More than his scoring
average, though, Holloman has provided them with an extra spring in his step
(i.e. athleticism) and lengthened the Lions' rotation.
Holloman's jump-out-of-the-gym ability has enabled him to be an extra
force on the boards. Its also helped
him throw down four dunks and score a season-best 18 points in a Beach District
Tournament playoff win over Bayside as well as get up in the lane to put in the
game's winning bucket over Maury last week.
