MATHEWS- William Campbell believes they are a new team as the playoffs have
been their opportunity to renew themselves. The team resembled the William
Campbell of old during this Saturday afternoon contest with Mathews to see who
would advance to the quarterfinals of the Division 1 playoffs.
William Campbell started the game trying to bang up the middle versus Mathews
and they weren't successful. Late in the first quarter however the Generals
struck go with quick hitch to Tevin Easley who broke a tackle and raced 82 yards
for the crowd silencing first score. Later in the second the Generals would run
a jet play to Easley who would race around the edge and down the sideline 73
yards to give the Generals 14-0 advantage.
Mathews appeared ready to answer back driving up toward mid field with some nice
runs by running back Chris Davis and Jacob Green. With the fans into the game
things looked good until a snap went astray and the Generals Deandre Elliott
scooped and raced 42 yards to the endzone to make it 21-0 William Campbell.
In the second half Mathews would lose a fumble after a few strong runs by James
Pavik. Quarterback Maxie Crews would use his running skills to dash 17 yards for
the score to make it a 28-0 advantage. At the end of the third the celebration
was already in motion for the faithful who traveled from Campbell County.
Mathews came into the playoffs 9-1 with their only lost being to King William
(12-0) while William Campbell got in with a 3-7 record with a tough schedule.
You couldn't tell anyone that the Generals had that record at this point in the
game.
In the fourth a fumbled punt attempt was picked up by Chris Guthrie of Generals
and he would score from 19 yards out. Crews would go in from 4 yards out set up
by a 52 yard run by Easley.
Mathews finished the season 10-2 overall. Chris Davis finished with a season
record 31 touchdowns for the Blue Devils.
William Campbell will travel a little closer to face Central Lunenburg (9-3)
Friday night at 7pm.
