Alas, the regular season finales are here for this unusual abbreviated 2021 High School Football 'spring' campaign across Virginia. The playoffs get underway next week with the VHSL releasing the pairings this coming Sunday across all six classifications.
In all the years we've done the rankings, I cannot recall that the top spot in all six classes has been occupied by the same time as Oscar Smith, Highland Springs, Lake Taylor, Lord Botetourt, Appomattox and Riverheads have remained unblemished.
While reigning State Champs like South County, Lake Taylor, Appomattox and Riverheads are in good shape for the playoffs, a couple of the defending State Champs are still battling for their playoff lives. Maury takes on unbeaten Churchland at Powhatan Field in Norfolk in a game they need to win in order to secure a spot in Region 5A, while Hopewell can leap from out to in for Region 3A by beating Class 5 member Matoaca.
