did not play a district schedule in `02.
Develli (above), an all state kicker from Park View
High School, will return for the 2003 football
season. His brother, Brandon handled the kicking
duties at the school during the `99 and `00 season
before Jared took over in 2001.

Park View: Coach Charlie Pierce told
VirginiaPreps "We will continue to be a hard working blue
collar team. A balance of offense and defense will be
important. Special teams should excel." On offense
Coach Pierce indicated that changes will take place this season,
with more balanced attack in the offing. They say defense
wins championships and Park View has the numbers to back it up.
Over the past 3 years the Patriots have yielded just 341 points
in 36 games (9.4 avg.), leading to 3 district titles.
Coach Pierce said "Defense has always been Park View's
forte' and it will continue to be an important aspect of Park
View football. A hallmark of that defense is Senior Joey
Babick who will handle the middle linebacker duties. At 5-5 190
lbs., Babick is, pound for pound, the strongest player on the
team and the hardest worker in the weight room. He's a smart
player who covers his lanes very well and, when he gets his body
on a runner, and will make the tackle. Key players to watch this fall for Park
View, Seniors: Jared Develli (all state kicker), John Laird
(RB/DB), Earle Barnes (all district RB/ DB), Ryan Beringer
(DL/OL), Roscoe Johnson (WR/DB - also a basketball and track
star), John Valcour (All-District in 2002) is back for his third
year as the starting center, Juniors: Donny Smith (OL/DL), Sean Daza (DB/WR), Patrick
Nolen (OL/DL), Eric Stanley 6-5 and 330 pounds and a 'hard
worker' as described by Coach Pierce, and finally Steve
Blankenship, the strong armed QB. Park View did suffer
some off season losses with the transfers of T J Disney and
Prince Lee.
Stone Bridge: Despite losing in the state
semifinals to Lafayette High School last December, the 2002
season was a remarkable success for the Bulldogs. Coach
Mickey Thompson hopes to continue to improve this fall - with a
possible return to the states a distinct possibility. Coach
Thompson told us "Our success will depend on the progress
our defense makes as the year goes along. On offense
the team returns Michael O'Brien, the do it all quarterback
(rushed and passed for over 1,000 yards last season, and was
named regional player of the year). Other names to watch
offense are receivers Andrew Winslow and Brian Calloway.
All state (defense) selection Landon Gouveia returns (he rushed
for over 1,000 yards last season). Assisting Gouveia on
defense should be Danny Jones, Chris Coker and Peter
Christensen.
Potomac Falls: Coach Casey Child's
Panthers experienced a break out season last fall and will have
a significant number of players returning. Key among those
is QB Joe Reilly who proved that he was more than a
capable signal caller last season. Despite losing Danny
Kramer the defensive unit should continue to be 'stingy'. Other
returnees include: 2nd team all district DE Adrian Tracy (JR),
Kavash Dastan (DL), Chris Jaeger LB (JR), John Veselick DB/WR,
Nasser Hamidi (OL),
Broad
Run: The Spartans return Michael Coleman, and look to become
competitive in the tough Dulles District. Despite not winning a
game in `02, they did have several impressive outings and Ken
Belchik and staff look to build upon those games in `03.
Other key returnees include: Alex Field TE (JR), and Walter
Gouveia LB.
Loudoun
County: "We graduated 23 seniors from our 2002 team so
we will be extremely young" Coach Pat McManus told
VirginiaPreps recently. The Raiders do return, however, 4
All District players, who will be expected to carry the load
this season. On offense the Raiders feature the Wing T,
and return Gil Veney, Armin Heremic (all district) and Antonio
Johnson, but must rebuild the offensive line. On defense
all district performers Mark Libby and Edwin Zukanovic return,
the linebackers will all be new with the exception of Tommy
Schwietz.
Loudoun Valley:
In a district with a number of top quarterbacks coming back, the
Vikings are no exception with John Sheehan returning after
impressive season in `02. One of John's favorite targets
is his brother Stephen who will be returning to play WR and will
be a junior this fall. Other returnees include:
Lawrence Wilson LB, and Gabe Lukas OL.
Heritage:
Wes Driskill, the head football coach, is optimistic about
this new high schools football team. "The team has
done a good job in increasing its strength and has good talent
and speed", Coach Driskill told us. They will need
all of that and more to compete in this district. After
going 3-7 last season playing a non-district schedule, they move
full time into the district this fall. Coach Driskill is upbeat
saying "The defense and the kicking game will show much
improvement". On offense running backs Kenny Smith
and Antonio Stringer are back, with Justin Johnson (OL), Robert
Rector (WR), and Tyler Duis (K). On defense the key
players should be Kevin Khair and Jajuan Johnson (DL) and LB's
will be Jonte Johnson and Chris Voorhis, with Kris Hunter at
DB.
Dominion:
When asked to name his teams strengths and weaknesses Head Coach
Mike Dougherty's response might be difficult to decipher which
is which. He told us "Our strengths have to be youth,
starting a new tradition and a new program (no bad habits to
break!), while our weaknesses will be youth, depth and starting
a new program from scratch. On offense the team will
deploy a double wing, shot gun with 4 and sometimes 5
wideouts. On defense they will show a varied look going
from a 5-3 to 6-2 or 4-4. Coach Dougherty remains
optimistic saying "This is a great opportunity for the
coaches and kids to start something from scratch. The
entire community is buzzing and weight lifting has begun.:
