baseman. He's got a tall, lanky build, and a short, loose arm action with simple, clean
mechanics. This season, Sean earned first team all-Dominion District and second-team All-Region honors as a junior after compiling a regular season record of 6-3, with an ERA of
1.24 and 80 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings. As his numbers indicate, Sean is one of the
premier strikeout pitchers in the area, if not the state.
In addition, Sean was a force at the plate. He hit .316 with a home run and seven RBI
during the regular season, and then exploded in the playoffs, hitting .667 with two doubles,
a homer, and five RBI. He was voted the MVP of the Clover Hill baseball team this season
for his efforts.
Sean says the major influences in his baseball development include his father, his AAU
coach Mark Dickman, Richmond Baseball Academy's Rich Graham and Ron Mauer, and, of
course, his high school coach Tim Lowery. Sean notes that, "My father has always been
there to push me to make me better. Whenever I am having mechanical issues I can either
go to Rich Graham or my Mark Dickman and they will help me out. And Coach Lowery is
always there to help me improve my mechanics, work on fielding my position, and also
helping me improve at the plate and in the outfield. I owe all my success to these five men
and thank them for everything they have done for me."
Sean is also a solid student, being selected to the All-Academic All-Central Region team. He
wants to continue his education and baseball career in college. Sean points to Clemson and
the University of Virginia, both of the baseball-rich ACC, as being two of his top college
choices. "What interests me about UVA and Clemson is the fact that they are both ACC
schools and are two of the best teams in the country," Sean explains. "Also the fact that
they both are two fine academic institutions."UPDATE: After this profile was completed Tierney informed VirginiaPreps.com that he had made a verbal commitment to UVa!
His plans for the summer include playing in an August wooden bat showcase series in
Marietta, Georgia with a team from California. Sean should be one of the premier college
pitching prospects in the area in 2007.
