Apprentice School Adds Two More

The Apprentice School in Newport News, VA under the
direction of Coach Franklin Chatman,
formerly the Head Coach at both Nansemond-Suffolk Academy as well as Nansemond
River High School, landed one Eastern Region talent to its roster in Granby
guard Johnnie Ferebee
earlier this week. However, the
Tidewater flavor didn't stop there for the Builders with the addition of two
more athletes from the 757 area code in Deep Creek (Chesapeake, VA) guard

style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'> Thomas and King's Fork (Suffolk, VA)
6-foot-2 wing Fred Scott.
Measuring in at 5-foot-10, Thomas averaged 17.1 points, 3.5
assists and 1.7 steals per game for the Hornets as a senior.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Few players in the region were as dangerous
shooting from beyond the arc. Thomas
proved that with 41 three-point makes, often scoring points in bunches to spark
the Deep Creek offensive attack.
"He's what I would call a fearless competitor.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He might be smallish in size, but he has a
knack for making shots," said Deep Creek Head Basketball Coach
style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>Leroy Ricks.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> "Obviously, he's a talented offensive player,
leading us in scoring the last two years, being named First Team All-Southeastern
District and one of the Top Ten scorers in Hampton Roads.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He's one of those guys if you're guarding him
you better check him from the beginning of the game all they way until the end
because he's going to keep coming at you."
Thomas also received interest from Chowan, St. Augustine's
and Christopher Newport. However, in the
end, the connection was best with the Apprentice School.
"Derrick Bryant,
one of the assistant coaches on staff at the Apprentice School, is a close
family friend of his, so he's excited to be going over there playing and
continuing his education," Ricks added. "We
look forward to watching him playing over there, too."
Scott went from a role play for the Bulldogs to one of their
more prominent offensive weapons, averaging 12.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.4
assists per game. The type of marked
improvement he showed this past season bodes well for him heading to college.
"I believe he'll provide some offense off the bench and be
able to knock down some open shots.
They'll put him at that wing position, and offensively I see him
shooting the basketball, which is what they were most intrigued with about him,"
King's Fork Head Basketball Coach Josh
Worrell said of Scott. "He can
rebound the ball, and at the next level he should be able to post up a smaller
guard and score some inside."
There weren't a bunch of suitors for Scott, though he did
draw some interest from Louisburg Junior College and Mount Olive, both located
in North Carolina. This way he can stay
closer to home, and could see the floor fairly early.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
"At one time he wanted to go prep," Worrell noted, "but at
the end of the day he really felt this was the best opportunity for him and he
will get a chance to play some."
