ALTAVISTA- Stacy Shepard had
her best game of the year with 29 points and put on a clinic going 12 for 12
from the floor as the Lady Colonels won their eleventh straight game with an
impressive 79-36 win over
Appomattox
last Friday night at AHS. The win
also put them at 8-0 in the district.
“Defensively, we really did a
good job and forced 30 turnovers on the night,” head coach Debra Spencer said
after the game. “13 of the
turnovers came in the first quarter, most of which came in the 17-0 run in which
our press forced the turnovers, and we were able to get a lot of quick, easy
baskets. We also shot the ball well,
over 50% in the first half. We
played hard for all 32 minutes and this was a big week with 3 wins and 2 coming
to our closest competitors,” Spencer added.
Before Shepard started her
outstanding night, Taylor Frazier and Sarah Slusher would get things started
combining for the first 13 points and 11 of what would be a 17-0 run to make the
score 13-7 AHS. Sarah Mattox, Jenny
Craft, and Shepard would finish off the runs with baskets making it 19-7
Colonels and they would go on cruise control from there.
Caitlin O’Callaghan would follow that with a pair of baskets and
Shepard would close out the quarter with a basket making it 25-13 Colonels after
the first quarter.
The second quarter would be
dominated by Shepard and the Colonels would take a 44-23 lead at the end of the
first half. The Colonels would start
out the third quarter with a 12-0 run to put the game away with Shepard getting
6 of the 12 points, Slusher getting 4 points and 5 assists, and Frazier getting
2 points and 2 assists. The lead was
56-23 at this point and put the nail in the coffin as the Colonels would coast
to a 79-36 victory. Shepard’s
great night included 16 rebounds and a pair of blocks in addition to the 29
points.
Last nights scheduled game at
Buckingham was not available at press time.
The Colonels also picked up one of the make up games lost in the Glenvar
tournament when Northside visits AHS on Monday, February 9 which will also have
JV action. Northside is a Group AA
power and should provide a good test to the Lady Colonels.
As for the rest of the week, the Colonels host
Gretna
Friday night and travel to William Campbell Tuesday night.
All games start after the JV games which begin at
6:00
.

ALTAVISTA- All eleven Lady
Colonels would score in this contest which were paced by Stacy Shepard’s 23
points and an 8-0 run to start the game would trigger a contest they would never
look back in as they defeated William Campbell 72-26 last Thursday at AHS in a
makeup game. Taylor Frazier would
add 11 and another strong bench performance would be lead by Brooke Angell’s 9
points and Keveatte Hall would add 7 off the bench as well.
“We’ve scored on defense
and off transition, areas we are working very hard on,” head coach Debra
Spencer said after the game. “Stacy
(Shepard) and Taylor (Frazier) had their usual solid games, with Stacy being a
huge presence in the paint. Brooke
Angell did a nice job getting some steals and turning those into fast break
points,” Spencer added of some of her players.
The inside presence of Shepard
was felt immediately as she got the game’s first basket off a Frazier assist
for a 2-0 lead. Frazier would then
get another assist moments later this time it was to Sarah Mattox for a basket
and a 4-0 lead. Mattox would return
the favor assisting Frazier for her first basket of the night for a 6-0 lead.
Shepard would cap the run converting a pair of foul shots and AHS would
sport an 8-0 lead with

remaining in the first quarter. W-C’s
Tiffany Robey and Shepard would exchange 4 points each, with Robey getting a
pair of baskets and Shepard getting a basket and a pair of foul shots to make it
12-4 AHS. Dagen Rutledge would add a
basket and a foul shot around a Shepard basket off a Sarah Slusher assist before
Shepard would score yet again on a turn around off a Mattox assist to extend the
lead to 16-7. Frazier would then add
a basket off a turnover, Hall would then follow with her first basket, and
Frazier would finish off the run with a basket off a turnover to make it 22-7
AHS. Hall would add a free throw to
end quarter one with AHS in control, 23-8.
AHS would start a 10-0 run to
begin the second quarter to put this game away.
Allison Bruce got it started with a put back, Shepard would follow with a
basket on an assist from Angell, Caitlin O’Callaghan would get a basket on a
Hall assist, and Shepard would close the run with a basket and a pair of foul
shots making it 33-8. Slusher would
then get a pair of free throws and off an assist from Ashley O’Brien, Taylor
Frazier nailed a 3-pointer that moved her past Brooke Mitchell for fourth place
on the girls all time scoring list and gave AHS a 38-9 lead.
O’Brien would then add her first basket of the night and then assist
Angell on a basket to make it 42-11. Angell
would fittingly end the first half with a steal and a lay up as they went into
halftime with a 44-11 lead.
Shepard would start the second
half with a 3-point play and a 47-11 lead. W-C
would go on a brief 5-0 run before Frazier added a lay up to make the lead
51-16. After a pair of W-C foul
shots, the Colonels would go on an 8-0 run to end the quarter that was spurred
by Hall, who added the first two baskets on a driving lay up and a Bruce assist.
Jenny Craft and Lauren Dawson would each close the quarter with baskets
as AHS took a 59-18 lead into the fourth quarter.
The transition game continued
to work into the fourth quarter with Mattox assisting Shepard on a fast break
lay-up and Angell following that with a steal and lay-up to extend the lead to
63-18. After a W-C basket by Attiana
Brightwell, AHS would go on a 7-0 run. Angell
would play a huge part in this run, with O’Callaghan hitting a baseline shot
off an Angell assist, and after a Bruce turn around shot, Angell would close the
run with a free throw and a basket off a Hall steal and assist to make it 70-20.
Craft would get the Colonels final basket in this 72-26 win.
When asked about how you guard
against complacency given the recent impressive performances, Spencer said,
“We tell them we haven’t achieved anything yet.
We’re only one game ahead and can’t afford it.
We need to come and play every night and we’ve done that.”

said. “Stacy Shepard had a good
night for us in the paint, and Sarah Slusher was solid for us all around.
Jenny Craft has also done a real good job for us the last couple of
games, and as a team we’ve wanted to come out strong in the second half and
finish off games,” Spencer added.

created a pair of turnovers in the quarter’s final two minutes.
Tameka Addison would start
Nelson off to a good fourth quarter start with 3 baskets in which Caitlin
O’Callaghan would get AHS’ only basket in Addison’s run to make the score
53-21. The Colonels would counter
with 6 straight on baskets from Shepard, Sarah Mattox, and O’Callaghan in
which Mattox and Frazier each got assists to extend the lead to 59-21.
After a Nelson 3-pointer from Crystal Diehl, Angell would get a basket
off a nice pass from Dawson making it 61-24.
