Shea Boyd was the ringleader of a threesome that led William Campbell's Generals
to a 14-0 season and the state Group A Division 1 football championship.
For his exploits, which included a single-season state record for total offense
and the state's second-highest career total offense ever, Boyd bumped last
year's winner from the first-team quarterback spot on The Associated Press
all-Group A team, and was chosen Group A player of the year by a panel of sports
writers from around the state.
The 6-foot, 202-pound senior completed 134 of 240 passes for 2,882 yards and 37
touchdowns. He ran for another 1,111 yards and 12 scores.
Boyd's 3,993 yards of offense wiped out the record of 3,691 yards set last year
by Mike Biehl of Salem-Virginia Beach. His career total of 10,205 yards is
second only to the 11,519 by Hampton's Ronald Curry in 1997.
Boyd also had plenty of help as the Generals rolled up 734 points.
Junior Cedric Peerman scored 45 touchdowns, including seven in a 70-0 rout of
Appalachia in the state championship. He ran 210 times for 1,992 yards and 38
touchdowns and caught 25 passes for 402 yards and seven TDs.
The third member of the trio was senior wide receiver Vernon Vassal, who had 57
receptions for 1,126 yards and 13 touchdowns. For his career, Vassall had 130
receptions for 2,477 yards and 27 touchdowns.
