1GlenvarSalem0-0
Having not recorded a season with more than six wins in it since 2006, there was little expectation that the Highlanders would breeze through their regular season at 9-1 last year then record five straight wins in the postseason to collect the state championship. Yet, that is exactly what head coach Kevin Clifford and his team did in 2014. Now, expectations are extremely high as 19 players with starting experience return to the field this fall. On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Zack Clifford comes back along with four returning offensive linemen -- Quential Alls, Zack Deck, Nathan Nobles and Will Tawney. Things look just as bright on the defensive side with three returning linemen, Dustin Brown back at linebacker and the entire starting secondary together again.
2GilesPearisburg0-0
The 2013 state champions made a strong run last season advancing to the state quarterfinals where they were felled by eventual state champion Glenvar. Their 12-1 campaign marked the fourth consecutive season that the Spartans have won at least ten games and the 2015 squad looks prepared to extend that streak. Two-way standout Brian Mann will be the headliner working from his running back and defensive back spots. He'll be supported on the offensive side by lineman Austin Cunningham and on the defensive side by lineman Cameron Perkins and linebacker Anthony Meadows.
3Wilson MemorialFishersville0-0
Four straight double-digit victory seasons leaves the Green Hornets with a 46-9 mark since the beginning of the 2011 season and their deepest postseason run came last year when they advanced to the state title game falling to Glenvar 20-14 in Salem. The graduation losses might cause some early season jitters but a strong culture is in place and reliable players return at running back in Jesse Trent and at linebacker with Tad Bosserman and Zac Denton.
4Clarke County SchoolBerryville0-0
Winners of 23 of their last 25 games, the Eagles have set themselves up as a serious state contender potentially ready to take that next step up this fall. Running back Hunter Rogers is the catalyst for the offense but he will get plenty of help from a roster that sees at least fourteen significant contributors return. Among the list are line of scrimmage players Julius Grant, Nathan Cossette, Jordan Penninton and Sam White.
5BrunswickLawrenceville0-0
Following a 12-3 campaign in 2013 that saw them lose the state championship game by just a point, the Bulldogs got off to a rough start last season dropping their first three contests but won nine straight before being knocked out of the playoffs by Wilson Memorial. The offense is stacked this year with quarterback Darren Owens, running back Treven Easter and center Connell Stith all returning to provide leadership while the defense will lean on linebacker James Phillips until some of the younger guys get their footing under them.
6GoochlandGoochland0-0
From 2011-2013, the Bulldogs totaled a 47-6 mark which may make their 9-3 campaign look like a little bit of a disappointment last year. Still, in a "down" season, Goochland advanced to the postseason and collected a win. Not too shabby. Expectations will be as high as ever with returning standouts flooding both the offensive and defensive huddle. Heading up the roster will be quarterback Reid Chenault, a four-year starter, offensive lineman John Creasey and defensive lineman K.K. Timberlake.
7Gate CityGate City0-0
Notching a 10-3 mark last season, the Blue Devils topped six teams with winning records last season and didn't fall to a team from Virginia until the state quarterfinals where they were dropped by Richlands 35-28. Offensive lineman Keener Burke will anchor the line of scrimmage where he will protect quarterback Hunter Collier, another returning starter. Meanwhile, Hunter Grizzle and Dustin White come back along the defensive front where they will get support from linebacker Hunter Jones.
8UnionBig Stone Gap0-0
Following their debut campaign in 2011, the Bears have established themselves as a program to keep a close eye on winning a playoff game in three straight seasons totaling a 26-10 mark during that run. The offense was solid last year and should be even more explosive this season with returning starters at tight end in James Mitchell, wide receiver in Raashaun Noaks and Jay Gavin and running back Braxton Bishop, among others. The defense starts with a solid foundation in the middle with linebackers Devan Summers and Jake Barnett both coming back off stellar seasons.
9Marion SeniorMarion0-0
Prior to last season, the Hurricanes had last notched a ten-win season all the way back in 2001 and, coming off a 6-5 campaign, hopes were high but few saw the 10-2 mark that they notched coming. After splitting their first two games, the 'Canes won eight straight contests before being eliminated from the postseason by Richlands. Protection up front comes in the form of offensive lineman Austin Wyatt. On the defensive side of the ball, defensive lineman James Reese will be a force to be reckoned with along the line of scrimmage.
10LeeJonesville0-0
Heading into last season, the Generals hadn't notched a winning season since 2007 though they did qualify for the postseason in 2013 just a season after finishing with only one win. They exploded last season winning their opening five games before dropping back-to-back contests. Four more wins followed until they were dropped by Giles in the playoffs, finishing 9-3. There are some substantial graduation losses to replace but there is still talent on both sides of the ball including offensive lineman Patrick Allen and defensive end D.J. Lawson.
