William and Mary Signs 6 In-State Prospects

- Fresh off one of the most successful seasons in school history, William and

Mary head football coach Jimmye Laycock has announced that 13 prep players have
signed letters of intent to play football for the Tribe starting this fall.
"This is a versatile and talented class," Laycock said. "Our staff has
worked extremely hard over the past several months, with the playoff
preparations running deep into the recruiting season, and I am excited to be
bringing in such an outstanding group."
The incoming freshmen class consists of six student-athletes from the state of
Virginia, while the remaining out-of-state prospects come from locations ranging
from South Carolina to Connecticut. Every area is accounted for in this year's
recruiting class, from the skill positions to the offensive and defensive lines.
The class includes six linemen, three linebacker/full backs, four athletic skill
players varying as defensive backs, wide receivers and running backs and one
quarterback.
William and Mary is coming off its best season in school history, which saw the
Tribe win a school-record 11 games, win a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference
title and advance to the NCAA Division I-AA national semifinals. In addition,
the College won a school-record seven home games and finished with a national
ranking of No. 3. The Tribe opens the 2005 season on Thursday, Sept. 2 at
Division I-A Marshall.
The following is short look at each member of the 2005 Tribe football recruiting
class:
R.J. Archer
Earlysville, VA
Albemarle High School
6-2, 175 lbs. – Quarterback
Head Coach: Rick Vrhahovac
Three-year starter at quarterback … Named the District Player of the Year as a
senior … Also earned first team all-district and all-region as a senior …
Holds Albemarle's school record for passing yards (4,568), touchdown passes
(41), completions and attempts … Also lettered in basketball (forward) and
baseball (pitcher).
Brenton Bryant
Elizabethtown, NC
East Bladen High School
6-3, 225 lbs. – Linebacker
Head Coach: Lenon Fisher
Two-year starter at linebacker and fullback … Earned all-conference
recognition as a senior by averaging 13 tackles a contest … Played his first
two seasons of high school football at Middletown (DE) High, the same high
school as Tribe QB Mike Potts.
Raphael Bynum
Stafford, VA
North Stafford High School
5-10, 220 lbs. – Fullback/Linebacker
Head Coach: Eric Cook
Three-year starter at both linebacker and fullback … Earned Second-team
all-region honors as a senior … Two-time All-Commonwealth District performer
… Recorded 85 total tackles (71 solo) in senior season … Also had 21 TFLs,
including four sacks, five QB hurries, two caused fumbles, two pass breakups and
one fumble recovery … Contributed 156 yards (1 TD) on 26 carries as team's
primary blocking back … Helped team to a 13-1 record and an appearance in the
Virginia AAA, Division 5 State Finals. … Also lettered in basketball as a
guard.
Cortenous Herbert
Germantown, MD
Northwest High School
Head Coach: Randy Trivers
6-4, 235 lbs. – Defensive line
Team captain of squad that went 13-1 and won the Maryland 3A State Championship,
as well as the West Region Title … Named to Montgomery County's Coaches
Association's First Team as a defensive lineman … Also a first team
selection by the Montgomery Gazette … Ended a productive senior year with 58
tackles, 11 TFLs, including three sacks, four forced fumbles, four PBUs, three
fumble recoveries and one TD … Also earned two letters in basketball and
indoor and outdoor track and field.
Fred Johnson
Richmond, VA
St. Christopher's School
6-1, 187 lbs. – Athlete/Defensive back
Head Coach: Paul Padalino
Three-year starter at QB for the Saints and also started at defensive back in
2004 … Helped the Saints earn their First Prep League Championship since
1991… Named as Second Team All Metro Defensive Back … First Team All State
Division 3 VISFA Defensive Back … Second Team All State Division 3 VISFA
Quarterback … All Virginia Prep League Quarterback and Defensive Back …
Ended senior season with 802 total yards (430 rushing, 372 passing) and 16 TDs
(nine rushing, four passing, two INT returns, one punt return) … Also
contributed 46 tackles, 11 pass break ups, four INTs, one fumble forced and
recovered … Accumulated 1,206 total yards (676 passing, 533 rushing) and 12
TDs (nine rushing, three passing) in just 10 games … Also lettered in
basketball and track.
Andrew Letcavage
Kulpmont, PA
Mt. Carmel Area High School
6-0, 190 lbs. – Defensive back / Running back
Headh Coach: Mike Brennan
Four-year starter … Played primarily free safety and running back, but has
also seen playing time at linebacker … Earned first team all-state, all-region
and all-district honors as a senior … Also named to the prestigious First Team
All-Platinum by the Harrisburg Patriot News … Collected 72 tackles and
accounted for 1,108 rushing yards as a senior … Amasssed 3,127 rushing yards
in his career … Helped lead team to the Pennsylvania AA State Championship as
a sophomore.
Sean Lissemore
Dumont, NJ
Dumont High School
Head Coach: Jim Davidson
6-4, 240 lbs – Defensive line
Three-year starter … Has seen action as both a guard and tackle on offense and
end and linebacker on defense … First team all-league as a linebacker in
senior season … Also earned honorable mention all-county honors …
Accumulated 120 total tackles (74 solo), nine sacks and one interception in
senior season … Handled kickoff duties … Four year letterman and All-League
performer in track and field in the 100- and 200-meters … Also competes in the
shot put … Three-year letter winner in wrestling, where he is also an
all-league performer.
D.J. McAulay
New Haven, CT
Westminster School
5-11, 180 lbs. – Wide receiver / Defensive back
Head Coach: Desmond Robinson
Very versatile athlete who has seen playing time at wide receiver, corner back
and running back … Led team in rushing and was second in receptions … Earned
All-New England honors as a wide receiver … Has exceptional speed and hands
… Been clocked as fast as a 10.5 in the 100-meters.
Thomas McCutcheon
Chesapeake, VA
Deep Creek High School
6-4, 300 lbs. – Offensive line
Head Coach: David Cox
Three-year starting lineman … Ended a standout senior season by earning
All-Tidewater and all-regional honors … Also is a letterman on the track and
field team as a shot putter.
C.J. Muse
Lexington, SC
Lexington High School
6-3, 300 lbs. – Offensive line
Head Coach: Bart Miller
Two-year starter at offensive tackle … Earned all-region and all-area honors
as a senior … Chosen to participate in Carolina's North/South All-Star game
… Named one of the top 50 players in South Carolina by The State … Also a
member of the school's golf team.
Matt Nickerson
Fairfax Station, VA
Woodson High School
5-9, 180 lbs. – Running back
Head Coach: Jerry Panonni
Two-year starter who has played a variety of positions, including running back,
outside linebacker and defensive back … First Team All-Liberty District …
Liberty District's Player of the Year … First Team Division 5 All-North
Region … Division 5 Offensive Player of the Year … Second Team Washington
Post All-Met … Second team all-state … Named one of top 50 recruits in the
nation by Old Spice … Led team to a 11-2 record and Liberty District and North
Region Championships … Ended season 2,281 rushing yards on 304 carries …
Scored a total of 37 TDs in senior season (33 rushing, two kickoff returns, two
receiving TDs) … Three-year letterwinner in lacrosse.
Michael Pigram
Hopewell, VA
Hopewell High School
5-10, 215 lbs. – Running back/Linebacker
Head Coach: Marshall Parker
Three-year letterwinner and linebacker … Earned First Team All-Central
District, All-Central Region and honorable mention all-state honors as a senior
… Avid weightlifter … As a senior, led team with 98 tackles, including 13
TFLs and five sacks … Also had three QB hurries, three forced fumbles, two
fumble recoveries and two interceptions, including one that was returned 85
yards for a touchdown … Led team with 12 TDs on the season … Rushed for 609
yards and 11 TDs on just 78 carries … Caught 13 passes for 172 yards.
Rob Varno
Wilmington, NC
Hoggard High School
6-5, 220 lbs. – Tight end/Defensive end
Head Coach: Scot Braswell
Three-year starter at tight end and defensive end … Earned all-conference
recognition as a tight end in junior and senior seasons … Selected to North
Carolina's Shine Bowl at tight end as a senior … Contributed 20 receptions
for 200 yards and two TDs as a senior … Also made 131 total tackles (71 solo),
five sacks and recovered three fumbles … Also earned varsity letters in
basketball as a power forward … Currently is team's leading rebounder.
