Before
we announce the 2013 VirginiaPreps.com 4A All State team, let's take a

quick moment to review the standards that we've put into place around
the all-region and all-state team that we name each season.
First,
we limit ourselves to just twelve players on each side of the ball with
four specialists and one coach of the year. We also will not name
co-players of the year on either side of the ball forcing us to make
very difficult decisions. Last but not least, because we limit the team
to just 28 players overall, we want to honor as many as possible,
therefore we will not name a player at more than one position.
On
the defensive side of the ball, we name four defensive linemen, four
linebackers, three defensive backs and one 'wildcard' position that we
generically name 'athlete'.
Offensively, we name a quarterback,
two running backs, three wide receivers, four offensive linemen and one
'wildcard' position that we generically name 'athlete'. Naming three
wide receivers is a notable change from past seasons when we named two
wide outs and one tight end, but the trend for spread offenses has led
us to believe that it is the right time to make that move. However,
when applicable, we will name a tight end as the third wide receiver,
so that position is a bit of a flex spot.

The Generals field general headed up an offense that scored a
state-high 719 points on the season in notching a perfect 15-0 record
to capture the state championship. The senior connected on
143 of 237 passes (60.3%) for 2,208 yards and 30 touchdowns against
only five interceptions while adding another 659 yards and 13 scores
rushing. Coach Billy Mills says, "He is extremely smart and
savvy on the field and off and he deserves more credit that he's
getting in the postseason and with the colleges. He's got
great character, leadership and is a great player. He's the
total package."

Sr. (Offensive Player of the Year)
Joining Kearney in the backfield helping to lead the
Generals to the state championship was Williams, our Offensive Player
of the Year. The senior carried the ball 224 times for 2,208
yards (an eye-popping 9.8 yards per carry) with 25 touchdowns.
Additionally, he served as a receiving threat collecting 24
passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns. "Sadarius is our
team captain, a great leader and a good linebacker, as well.
If there is another back in the state of Virginia better than
Sadarius, I haven't seen him."

style="font-weight: bold;">RB: Josh Sweet, Woodgrove, Sr.
As the Woodgrove Wolverines notched their best season in the school's
four-history (9-4), the senior running back led an offense that scored
33.0 points per game by carrying the ball 380 times on the season for
2,677 yards and 39 touchdowns when everyon in the stadium knew that he
was the team's go-to player as no other running back carried the ball
more than 40 times during the season. "He is one of the
toughest kids that I've ever coached," sayd Woodgrove's Mike Skinner.

style="font-weight: bold;">WR: Jaquan Jenkins, Denbigh, Sr.
The Patriots notched their first winning season since 2006
and posted their best record since the turn of the century by throwing
the ball to their senior wide receiver as often as possible.
On the year, Jenkins collected 52 passes for 946 yards and 12
touchdowns in helping the offense score 432 points in twelve games, an
average of 36.0 points per contest.
WR: Keyshawn Johnson,
Caroline, Jr.
The Cavaliers advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2007
as they made a habit out of getting the ball into the hands of their
junior wide receiver who was the top receiver in the state in Class 4A
by collecting 56 passes for 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns.
WR: Dontae Mauck,
Handley, Jr.
Another outstanding junior, the Judges relied on Mauck to
make big plays in open space and he obliged them by hauling in 49
passes for 871 yards and ten touchdowns in helping his offense total
402 points in eleven games, an average of 36.5 points per contest.
The versatile playmaker was named a first team wide receiver
and first team defensive back in Conference 23 by the coaches and was
named a second team return specialist and second team all-purpose
player.
OL: Devyn Marshall,
Dinwiddie, Sr.
The Generals' senior center, along with quarterback Kearney, was on of
two players to touch the ball on every play for the state's most
prolific offense. According to Coach Billy Mills, Marshall
graded out at 87% for the team on the year recording 109 knockdown
blocks. "He made all of the o-line calls, called the cadence
and controlled the tempo for the offense. He was one of the
best to ever play the position for us and his leadership on the
offensive line was what made it go and kept it all together."
OL: Justice Gilbert, Lake
Taylor, Sr.
The Titans' senior was a key component in his team's 10-3 record this
season that inlcuded losses only to programs who advanced to the state
title game as they fell to Oscar Smith, L.C. Bird and Dinwiddie during
their 2013 campaign. The team's best offensive linemen opened
holes allowing for the Norfolk-area school to total 447 points in
thirteen games, an average of 34.3 points per contest.

The Spartans were one of the top rushing units in the state advancing
to the state semifinals where they fell to Sherando scoring 500 points
in fourteen games this season, an average of 35.7 points per contest.
The unit often followed the University of Richmond commit
when running the ball as junior running back Coleman Fox totaled over
1,800 yards on the ground during the year.

The top blocker on the Generals' offensive line, the senior was a
four-year starter for Coach Billy Mills and he anchored a line that
headed up the state's best offense. Accoring to Mills, the
lineman graded out at 89% for the year for a group that averaged 280
yards rushing and 432 yards of total offense per contest.
"Shawn is as solid an offensive lineman as I have ever had as
a coach. You could always count on running behind him."
OL: Dewey Decatur,
Courtland, Sr.
The Courtland Cougars won ten games for the first time since 2006 this
season and scored 471 points on offense behind a run-heavy attack
anchored by an offensive line that opened up enough holes for three of
the team's running backs to rush for over 1,000 yards each on the year.

Sr.
The quarterback for the Sherando Warriors led his team to
the state championship game and a 13-2 record by connecting on 115 of
204 passes for 2,120 yards and 20 touchdowns against only seven
interceptions while also providing big numbers on the ground rushing
for 873 yards and seven touchdowns on 168 attempts.

In notching a 10-3 record and allowing only 125 points on the season,
the Lake Taylor defense again ranked among the best in the state and
their senior leader committed to Ohio State totaled 48 tackles, 19 for
loss, 10 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries despite
missing action in several games due to injury.
DL: Tyler Hamilton,
Sherando, Sr.
Sherando made a run to the state championship game winning thirteen of
fifteen games by allowing only 224 points on the season and their
senior defensive linemen helped lead the way by collecting 79 tackles
with 15 for loss and 3.5 sacks. "Tyler faced opponents nearly
every game that were larger than him but no on ever out-worked him,"
says assitant coach Cory Carlson. "Tyler has great hands and
used excellent leverage to consistently win his match ups."
DL: John Branch,
Dinwiddie, Jr.
Heading up the top defense in Class 4A as a junior, Branch put
up incredible numbers as he totaled 107 tackles, 67 solo, 28 for loss,
13 hurries and a school-record 15 sacks. He also added four
forced fumbles and ran one back for a 53-yard touchdown.
Coach Billy Mills says, "He was very difficult to
block one on one and caused havoc with opposing offenses.
He's a big time recruit already holding an offer from Old
Dominion University. He is still learning the position and
his best at this spot is yet to come."

Woodgrove posted a school-best 9-4 season in 2013 headed up by a
defense that ranked among the top five in the state in Class 4A.
Their senior lineman committed to the University of Virginia
was a key component of the team notching 86 tackles and 15 sacks on the
year.

(Defensive Player of the Year)
No player in the class put up more eye-popping numbers than the
Shernado Warriors middle backer who led the team (and likely the state)
with 191 total tackles including 13 for loss with three interceptions
and two sacks. As if that work was not enough, he also
totaled 898 yards and 24 touchdowns rushing for the offense.
"George is the heart of our defense. He has great
instincts and physical ability and that is matched by his work ethic.
He dominated at his position all year," says assistant coach
Cory Carlson.
LB: Chad Smith, Dominion,
Jr.
The Titans junior is one of the top recruits in the state from the
Class of 2015 having already picked up offers from Charlotte, Duke,
Illinois, Old Dominion, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Virginia Tech as he
led Dominion to their first winning record in school history as they
won seven of their twelve games in 2013. "He is a physical
freak," says head coach Karl Buckwalter.
LB: Rashard Hicks,
Dinwiddie, Sr.
The best player on the second level for the best defense
in the state in Class 4A was Hicks who totaled 123 tackles, 73 solo, 24
quarterback hurries, 16 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, three fumble
recoveries and one forced fumble along with scoring a defensive
touchdown. "He anchored the defense from his middle
linebacker position," says head coach Billy Mills. "He is
cat-like quick and he made up for his lack of size with quickness and
toughness. His was the key move that sparked the defense."

The Patriots notched their first winning season since 2006 and their
senior linebacker was first and foremost among the players keying their
success. From his second-level spot, the Pats leader totaled
130 tackles, 25 for loss with 13 sacks and one interception which he
returned for a touchdown.

Jr.
The Titans ranked as the #2 defense in the class in 2013 and their
junior defensive back did a bunch of work for the unit totaling 51
tackles, 11 pass break ups, seven tackles for loss, two interceptions
and two forced fumbles. In winning ten of thriteen games, the
Titans allowed only 125 points, bested only by Dinwiddie.

Sr.
Though fellow first-teamers and teammates Branch, Hicks
and Williams were major players for the Generals top-ranked defense, no
one was more impactful than their senior defensive back who totaled 121
tackles, 76 solo, 15 tackles for loss, eight pass break ups,
three hurries, three forced fumbles, two interceptions, two defensive
scores, one sack and one forced fumble. His defense allowed
only 80 yards per game and pitched four shutouts. "Rashaad's
leadership as a captain was one of the biggest reasons we won the
championship," says head coach Billy Mills.
DB:

style="font-weight: bold;">Denzel Williams, Dinwiddie, Jr.
Adding to Goodqyn's work in the secondary was junior defensive back
Williams who totaled 107 tackles, 70 of them solo, with eight
interceptions, five forced fumbles, four tackles for loss, three pass
break ups, two fumble recoveries and two defensive scores.
"Denzel led the team in big hits which many times led to
fumbles by the opposition. He sees the field very well and
has a knack for being around the ball. He can play down in
box or coverage and played his biggest in our biggest games," says
coach Billy Mills.
ATH:
style="font-weight: bold;">Tyler Fedison, Salem, Jr.
style="font-weight: bold;">
The Spartans won eleven of fourteen games this season advancing to the
state semifinals behind a solid defense that allowed only 224 points on
the season and their junior linebacker headed up the unit notching 82
solo tackles, 60 assists for 142 total with nine for loss and seven
sacks. "He was extremely disciplined in reading his keys and
is a downhill player on defense," says head coach Stephen Magenbauer.

K: Caleb McGeough,
GW-Danville, Jr.
The Eagles offense kept their kicker busy scoring 481
points in twelve games and he connected on 58 of 64 extra point kicks
while also hitting on three of four field goals totaling 67 points on
the year.
P: Peter Colley, Monacan,
Sr.
The coaches pick for the first team spot in Conference 20 and
VirginiaPreps.com pick as the all-region punter in Class 4A South, the
Chiefs kicker continues his impressive postseason award-winning streak
by being named our first team all-state specialist.
RET: Kendrick Kube,
Eastern View, Jr.
The coaches Conference 22 Offensive Player of the Year, few did more on
the field than Kube this past season as he not only served as the
return man for the Cyclones, he also totaled 1,484 yards rushing with
20 touchdowns while hauling in 16 passes for 427 yards and three scores
in helping his team notch a school best 10-2 season.
RET: Logan Allen,
Powhatan, Soph.
The first-team kick returner and running back on the coaches Conference
19 team, the underclassman scored 134 points for the Indians this
season by scoring 22 touchdowns and one two-point conversion while
rushing for 1,570 yards on the year.

Coming into the 2013 season, Dinwiddie was among the top contenders in 4A as the Generals were ranked #3 in our preseason top ten. Coach Mills and staff were excited about the season as, on paper, this looked to be the most talented and experienced squad the program had fielded in years with both an explosive offense and a dominating defense. They more than lived up to expectations as they finished the season as one of only three undefeated teams in Virginia. In total, Mills led a team that was the highest scoring team in the state totaling 719 points on the year while allowing a Class 4A-best 8.4 points per game.
The Generals opened the season by scoring 50 or more points in five of their first six games including a 77-point explosion in week four against Colonial Heights. It wasn't until their seventh game of the season that they met a team that would finish with a winning record but the tough back end did nothing to slow them down as they toppled Matoaca, Hopewell, Thomas Dale and Meadowbrook before entering the postseason. In the playoffs, the team turned it up a level by shutting out their first three opponents including defending state champion Lake Taylor. In their final two outings, Mills led his team to 46-14 and 56-14 drubbings of Heritage and Sherando to collect the school's first state title.
