Video - Heritage's George Massenburg after 21-13 win over King's Fork

The Heritage Hurricanes are moving on to the second round of the 4A-East Region Playoffs after scoring the final 14 points to turn a brief deficit into a 21-13 victory over the sixth-seeded King's Fork Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at John B. Todd Stadium in Newport News.

Seeded third among all Conference 17 and 18 schools, Heritage took the lead early in the second quarter on quarterback Jeremiah Boyd's 61-yard touchdown pass to Shedrick Washington on 3rd & 7, followed by a successful extra point from Roy Johnson III.

It would be a big day for Johnson, who ran the ball 26 times for 109 yards. In the second half, he had 16 rushes for 71 yards. King's Fork would re-gain the lead, though, 13-7 on backup senior quarterback John Woods' second touchdown run of the first half.

Woods filled in for injured starter Justin German. It appeared the visiting Bulldogs would take the lead heading into the locker room at half-time, but Heritage senior wide receiver Amonyae Watson had other ideas.

On 3rd & 27 from their own 36-yard line, Watson caught a screen pass from Boyd and avoided multiple tackles on his way to scoring a 64-yard touchdown. The Canes would lead 14-13 at the end of the second and third quarter. Just 45 seconds into the fourth period, they extended their lead to eight points after Boyd punched in a touchdown from a yard out on 4th & Goal.

Boyd was only 5 of 17 through the air with three interceptions - two by King's Fork junior Darran Butts - but he did rack up 192 yards passing. On offense, the Bulldogs were led by Woods' 139 yards passing, though he was just 12 of 32 with a pair of interceptions - one each by safeties Asante Randolph and Darriel Walker, whose pick sealed the victory on the final play of the game.

While King's Fork's season ends at 4-7 overall, Heritage pushed its record to 8-3 and draws a re-match with #2 seed Lake Taylor (10-1). Back on August 26th in the season opener, the Canes went to Norfolk and handed Lake Taylor its lone loss, 35-21.
