Delmarva Canes RHP/INF and Steward
School product, Hayden White , verbally committed to East Carolina
University and Head Coach Billy Godwin earlier this school year. After spending
the entire fall with the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox Underclass program under the
direction of Dan Gitzen (now with the newly formed Delmarva Canes
program), White had accumulated a laundry list of top Division 1 programs vying
for his service.
As the reigning VCC Player of the Year, the switch-hitting White boasted a .506
batting average, over 20 doubles and 25+ RBI's while manning the pivotal
shortstop position, however when it came to his appeal to coaches at the next
level his performance on the mound set him apart. After a 2010 high school
campaign where he was 7-1 with 79k's and a 1.3 ERA, White's velocity spiked into
the upper 80's in the fall complemented by a hard breaking slider. But it was
after a successful stint at the Perfect Game Underclass National Championships
in Ft. Myer's, FL coupled with a dominate performance for the Gold Medal winning
VA 2012 Border Battle Squad that ECU decided to make their pitch to try and get
Hayden to be a Pirate in the fall of 2012.
Hayden was more then happy to verbally accept.
"I chose ECU because of their great reputation as a top-notch baseball program,
along with the fact that at the end of the day I could see myself going their
even if I did not play baseball. From the beginning of the recruitment process I
really connected with Coach Schnabel and Coach Rozell and I felt comfortable
knowing that at the end of the day ECU was the right fit for me."
Since then White has helped his Steward baseball program to an undefeated record
to start this 2011 season, including a 5-1 victory over perennial power
Greenbriar Christian where he recorded 13 strikeouts.
On the 2011 season Hayden is 15-29 at the plate, 4-0 on the mound, averaging 10k
per outing and giving up only a handful of runs all while his fastball is
averaging a sitting velocity of 90-91 mph.
While 2011 seems to be off to a great start for White the junior stays humble in
his goals.
"Individual accomplishments are great but my first goal is to help win a Private
School State Championship. It would be a great accomplishment for the program,
and a good way to send out our seniors on a high note."
